Recirculating aquaculture systems, or RAS, provide a constant and controlled environment to rear farmed fish. They minimise water consumption, control culture conditions and allow effective management of waste streams. They can also provide some degree of biosecurity through measures to isolate the stock from the external environment. The rate of adoption of RAS in the aquaculture industry has been growing fast worldwide, and in January 2022 the ACIG looked at the potential for RAS to be a major contributor to English aquaculture and seafood production.
In July 2023 it was announced that a significant portion of the £40.1 million in grants awarded in the second round of the UK's £100m Seafood Fund Infrastructure Scheme, will be supporting RAS projects in the UK.
This meeting will look into this growing sector in more detail.

Seafood Issues Groups
The ACIG is one of a number of Seafish-facilitated discussion forums which focus on the integrity of the seafood supply chain. These groups provide a discussion platform for some of the most important issues facing the seafood industry, particularly in relation to the responsible sourcing of seafood. They are an opportunity for all those involved in the seafood supply chain to reach a consensus on common issues.
