This meeting will explore how the seafood supply chain is addressing emerging issues and challenges.

Responsible seafood production supports the livelihoods of fishing and coastal communities and respects basic human rights, including welfare and equality, across the seafood supply chain. However high-profile journals continue to publish exposés alleging modern slavery, human trafficking, child labour and other egregious human rights abuses occurring in different fisheries around the world. These exposés have been a major catalyst for convening representatives from across academia, human rights and environmental non-profit organisations and the seafood industry to tackle these issues.

These allegations encompass concerns about labour and human rights issues, which affect many countries and a wide range of products, and challenge the reputation of the seafood sector. This issue is too big and too complex for any individual company or organisation to tackle on its own. This meeting will be an opportunity to look at some of the initiatives that have been developed, or are developing now, to address these issues.

They are an opportunity for all those involved in the seafood supply chain to reach a consensus on common issues.
