2,000th training award issued

Our Onshore Training Advisor, Richard Wardell, talks about available onshore training programmes and highlights a milestone recently achieved.

The variety of training that we offer includes compliance programmes, such as food hygiene and health & safety along with skills courses including fish smoking and fish quality assessment.

This range is aimed at people working in the onshore sectors of the UK seafood industry including processors, wholesalers, fishmongers and fish friers.

However, with personnel across the supply chain from net to plate recommended to complete food hygiene training, fishers have completed our online Elementary Food Hygiene qualification too.

Currently we are able to provide funding support for our onshore training certificated programmes that are delivered online, either as a remote training course, or as a self-study eLearning programme.

This funding is available for individuals who are employed directly in the UK seafood industry. Our compliance training programmes are accredited by the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS).

This results in successful candidates being issued with a nationally recognised qualification which is jointly awarded by REHIS and us.

Our onshore training courses support staff development and retention. Other benefits of our remote and online programmes include no travel costs and time saved as there is no journey required to get to a training venue.

It’s also great news for the environment because there’s no need to jump in the car!

Our eLearning programmes allow a learner to study at a place, pace and time that is convenient for them and their employers.

Abbie Proctor (nee Williamson), Manager at Lynn Shellfish, recipient of our 2,000th training award

Whilst our primary audience is UK seafood workers, by making training courses available remotely, has meant that geography is no longer a barrier for international learners.

Since we amended our delivery model to predominantly remote in 2020, there have been learners from Australia, Canada, Uruguay and the United States of America who have attended our training courses.

We also have two new training courses which will be added to our portfolio of programmes.

Firstly, there is our Bivalve Purification Management course which focuses on the procedures and management controls required to ensure safer live bivalves are available for sale to the public. Secondly, there is the Food Allergens Management programme.

This will highlight how food industry managers can actively manage allergens in a food manufacturing context, looking at the systems, procedures and policies needed to ensure that seafood products entering the food chain are safe.

Since our 2020 digital transformation, we have issued our 2,000th training award. The recipient of this was Abbie Proctor (nee Williamson) who is the manager at Lynn Shellfish in Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

Abbie attended our Bivalve Purification Operations training course and successfully completed the online invigilated exam.

The registration process with Seafish was easy to follow and Martin Syvret delivered an engaging training course. This was highlighted by the fact that myself and four of my team passed the online invigilated exam. Attending a remote training course meant that we saved time by not having to travel to a venue and we didn’t have to pay any travel costs either. I’m thrilled to be the recipient of the 2,000th training award and I’m looking forward to participating the first Bivalve Purification Management training course.
