2021 Northern Ireland Small Port Infrastructure Survey
The Northern Ireland Fishing & Seafood Development Programme was established in response to calls from the Northern Ireland fishing industry to make significant investments in fishing infrastructure in Kilkeel, Portavogie and Ardglass harbours. Subsequently, Seafish have undertaken a separate survey assessing the infrastructure and facilities in Northern Ireland’s remaining smaller fishing ports and harbours. The results from the survey are provided in this report.
During the summer of 2021, harbour masters around Northern Ireland took part in our anonymous infrastructure and facilities survey. The aim of the survey was to better understand the availability of facilities in the smaller ports of Northern Ireland, and whether these can support a viable, safe and environmentally responsible inshore fishing industry.
The results of the survey aim to contribute to the development of regional priorities highlighting where funding is required and in the long-term, contribute to improvements in fisheries infrastructure, facilities and safety within small ports.”
Identifying gaps in infrastructure, the survey results will help prioritise future funding and development requirements. The report and summarised results will act as a referencing tool for industry, providing an evidence base to support the long-term planning for the seafood industry in Northern Ireland.
We would like to take an opportunity to thank all those who took part in the survey and spoke with our researchers. The information provided will help us to build a more detailed picture of the Northern Ireland seafood industry and how we can help to support it.
