Funding for safety equipment and training

A range of funding is available to help fishing vessel owners and skippers with the costs to improve the safety and wellbeing of them and their crew.

To encourage vessel owners to make potentially life-saving investments, government funding is available to assist with the cost. Funding is available for making vessel improvements, buying safety equipment or attending safety training.

Government grants

There are various funds available from the UK Government and devolved administrations in the UK depending on where you live. The links below will take you to the relevant Government websites with information on what is available and how to apply:

Fishing Industry Safety Group funding

In 2019, the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and maritime charity Trinity House made £1m available to us. This is to support the Fishing Industry Safety Group’s work to stop preventable deaths on fishing vessels.

We are using this money to:

  • Help fishing vessels owners with the cost of purchasing personal locator beacons for their crew
  • Fund man overboard awareness events for fishermen in environmental pools that mimic realistic sea conditions
  • Support the Home and Dry campaign to get important safety messages to fishing vessel owners, skippers and crew
  • Pay for people working on fishing vessels to do additional safety training. This includes those studying online during the current pandemic.

If you would like to talk to someone about funding support for safety at sea, email training@seafish.co.uk.
