Seafish co-ordinates training for commercial fishermen working on UK-registered fishing vessels.

Our role
We work with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to develop courses for commercial fishermen. We approve instructors and training providers and ensure the quality of their provision, and develop training materials and online learning resources.

Requirements for fishermen
Training is vitally important for fishermen to ensure that they have the right knowledge, skills and qualifications required to undertake what can be hazardous work as safely as possible.

Every commercial fisherman working on a UK registered vessel must complete the five mandatory basic safety training courses. For further information visit our Training and Certification Requirements webpage.

Our 3-week Introduction to Commercial Fishing course prepares new entrants for work in commercial fishing and includes the basic mandatory courses as well as additional knowledge and skills, visit the course webpage to find out more.
