Seafish Industry Guidance Note on Mackerel 25 March 2015

Summary
There was a resolution to the long dispute regarding the fishing of mackerel in the North East Atlantic (NEA) amongst the Coastal States in March 2014. The crisis had erupted in 2009 after the Faeroe Islands withdrew from the mackerel management agreement in response to Iceland’s increasing mackerel catch. The level of autonomous quotas set by both Iceland and the Faeroe Islands during the period 2009 to 2013 was strongly challenged by both the EU and Norway. This briefing note gives some background and explains the current position as at March 2015.
