Fishing Trials to Evaluate the Use of Square Mesh Selector Panels Fitted to Nephrops Trawls - MFV 'HEATHER SPRIG' (BCK 181) - November/December 1990

Summary

The sea trials on the 'HEATHER SPRIG' were to assess the effectiveness of a square mesh window in the extension of a Nephrop dual purpose trawl. 80 mm and 70 mm panels were fitted within the 70 mm diamond mesh and comparisons of discards rates measured using the twin rig trawl technique. Both panels substantially reduced discards of whiting and haddock although latter was not a dominant species during the fishing period.
