A study of the Sales/Marketing of Demersal Landings at UK Ports and the potential of Electronic Marketing Systems

Summary
This report examines existing practices and problems with the port sale and marketing of fresh demeral species in the UK and the need to make producers more responsive to market requirements. It examines UK industry structures, sales methods and the efficiency of the sales systems to reward good marketing practice (quality, supply, forward information, traceability etc). It compares them with systems in use elsewhere in Europe. The major constraints to the introduction of new systems are identified as opposition from vested commercial interests and problems in establishing the conditions necessary for their success, particularly, grading and weighing.
