The FISH Standard provides a voluntary, independent and accredited third-party certification programme for labour practices on vessels in wild-capture fisheries around the globe. FISH stands for Fairness, Integrity, Safety, and Health.
A number of seafood industry players worldwide have united to develop a voluntary, independent and accredited third-party certification program for labour practices on fishing vessels called the 'FISH Standard for Crew'. The FISH Standard was developed to assure seafood buyers that the fish they are buying and selling is harvested by crews that are: recruited and hired ethically; treated with respect on the vessel; paid properly; and have processes to address grievances. The FISH Standard certification will be open to wild-capture harvesters of all sizes.
FISH Standard consultation
From January 5 through March 8, 2021, the FISH Standard for Crew conducted a public consultation of the Standard. FISH thanks those who participated for taking the time and effort to provide comments on the FISH Standard for Crew. These valuable comments helped improve and strengthen the FISH Standard and the Auditor Guidance.
Significance for seafood businesses:
A seafood-specific standard. Sourcing seafood that is accredited to a standard that has a social component provides reassurance that the seafood you are purchasing has been independently verified concerning social issues.
