Fishmonger apprenticeship revision 2024

A new apprenticeship standard for fishmongers, merchants, wholesalers and some primary processors

During 2024 we expect to finish the IfATE / employer led review and revision of the Level 2 Fishmonger standard.

This new Standard (and associated end point assessment plan) are designed to allow fish merchants, wholesalers and some of those working in primary processing to become apprentices under a new wholesaler pathway added to the standard this year.

The retail pathway will recognise the customer service skills required by all retail fishmongers while the wholesaler pathway will recognise the skills needed to process larger volumes of fish or shellfish by hand, as well as the requirements of meeting the needs of customers and colleagues.

Both pathways are underpinned by a significant range of core skills, knowledge and behaviours that are essential to fishmongers, merchants, wholesalers and processors alike.

The current (2019 to 2024) Apprenticeship:

  • The Fishmonger Standard - a summary of what your apprentice will be expected to be able to do by the end of their (2 year) programme.
  • The Fishmonger assessment plan - a detailed list of the skills, knowledge and behaviours that contribute to the apprentice fishmonger's end point assessment.
  • MFS Recognised Fishmonger - having completed the fishmonger apprenticeship, your apprentice can apply to become a fishmonger recognised by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers.

The draft 2024 revised Apprenticeship

  • The revised Fishmonger Standard - a summary of what your apprentice will be expected to be able to do by the end of their (18 month) programme.  This consists of a core and two pathways.
  • The revised Fishmonger assessment plan - a detailed list of how the skills, knowledge and behaviours that contribute to the apprentice fishmonger's end point assessment are to be assessed.
  • MFS Recognised Fishmonger - having completed the fishmonger apprenticeship, your apprentice can apply to become a either a recognised fishmonger or a craft fishmonger, as certified by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers.

Funding

The current (2019 to 2024) apprenticeship attracts £12,000 of funding.

Until the apprenticeship training providers submit their costings to IfATE, we will have no firm idea of the level of funding that the revised apprenticeship programme will attract.
