his study has been undertaken by Poseidon Aquatic Resource Management Ltd for the Scottish Fisheries Sustainable Accreditation Group (SFSAG) and was completed from January to April 2014. The aim of this work is to inform decision making processes on Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, including whether fisheries should enter the MSC certification process in the first place or if currently certified fisheries should seek re-assessment (after the 5 year period of MSC certification). This report presents the findings from the first year of a study to provide an assessment of the benefits of fishery accreditation, using the MSC certified North Sea (NS) haddock fishery as a detailed case study to determine current benefits and to track benefits for the next two consecutive years (in subsequent follow-up research). The objective of the project is to identify and assess the benefits of Scottish MSC haddock certification in branded MSC and non-labelled segments of the retail and foodservice supply chains. Furthermore, indirect benefits will be explored throughout the supply chain and with other stakeholders in the seafood industry

Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK. This literature review is one of the key outputs. This addresses; the context and challenges; the scope of analysis, in applying ethical concepts and standards to the seafood industry; a review of relevant published reports; a review of media reports, websites and advocacy campaigns; an initial assessment of government, industry and multi-stakeholder initiatives; and an overall assessment and gap analysis.

Chilled seafood in retail 2017: The chilled seafood sector continues to take the largest share of the multiple retail seafood market with a wide range of segments and species. It is the only seafood sector in growth since 2007. Opportunities to grow the category exist around product formats, flavours, mission and channel.

Chilled natural seafood (plain fillets or shellfish) dominates the British retail seafood market. Chilled seafood has grown over both the long and short term, expanding market share at the expense of frozen and ambient. Chilled sushi, dusted, and fingers are the rising stars of the chilled sector

h by-catch is usually unmarketable due to small size, poor quality or lack of quota. With increasing pressure on limited resources the industry needs to maximise quality and reduce environmental costs. Recent trials have shown that the coverless trawl reduced the by-catch of whiting by 70%, reduced severe Nephrops damage by 18%, caught 10% more Nephrops and increased earnings.
