Seafish response to A Strategy for Marine Nature Conservation in Scotland and Guidelines on the selection of MPAs and development of the MPA network

Seafish has produced a combined response to two Scottish consultations on the future of the Scottish marine environment. The consultations were on the draft Marine Nature Conservation Strategy for Scotland and on draft guidelines on the selection of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and the development of the MPA network in the seas around Scotland. Algal mediated turbididity and larval performance in marine fish_Parts1and2

Green water’ techniques (i.e. the addition of microalgae to the culture tank) can be used to encourage the first feeding of fish larvae in marine hatcheries. The effects of algal turbidity on the visual foraging behaviour of larvae were assessed in trials by investigating the contrast between prey and the background lighting (Part 1 report & video clip). In subsequent trials, ‘green water’ had no significant effect on first feeding success of larval cod (Part 2).

Autonomous Scallop Harvesting Platform (ASHP)

The Autonomous Scallop Harvesting Platform (ASHP) is envisaged to be a self-contained automatic shellfish harvesting system. The concept is of a vehicle which moves underwater over a pre-determined search area and identifies and collects specified shellfish with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

The report presents economic estimates at UK, home nation and fleet segment level for the UK fishing fleet. The estimates are calculated based on samples of fishing costs and earnings gathered by Seafish as part of the 2019 Annual Fleet Economic Survey

Culturing of Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus)_Aggression in Nephrops

The first aim of this project was to examine and gain a better understanding of the aggressive behaviour of the animals. Aggressive behaviour, causing injury or death, is thought to be a major obstacle in keeping animals in communal tanks. It was found that the Norway lobsters are able to build a dominance hierarchy, which reduces overall aggression in communal tanks. Moreover, it was found that pheromones are necessary for establishing dominance. Follow up studies will aim to gain a better understanding of the role of aggression in natural behaviour including territoriality,resource competition and mate choice. The second aim is to develop economic holding conditions for the animals. Holding animals in communal tanks is thought to be easier to manage - in terms of feeding and maintaining good water quality - than keeping them separately. Ongoing experiments comparing holding conditions indicate that there seems to be no difference in survival rate between individual and communal holding conditions. The third aim is to decide upon the best methods of collecting eggs and to hatch them. This will be researched in the next two years. Eggs will be collected by catching berried females. Holding conditions will be tested to maximize the hatching rate of the four larval stages in the lab. The results of the study will improve the understanding of the species which could help drive better stock management. In addition, it could support the fishing industry by providing sustainability and reducing the influence of natural barriers to fishing, such as weather conditions.

Seafish briefing on labour issues in Thailand's warm water prawn supply chain. December 2014.

The Thai government has long faced criticism for its failure to curb labour and human rights abuses occurring in the country, however attention came to a head in June 2014 with the publication of a series of articles and videos in the Guardian newspaper containing allegations of human trafficking and slave labour in the Thai seafood industry. At the same time the US State Department downgraded Thailand to a Tier 3 ranking on its 2014 Trafficking in Persons report. Tier 3 status indicates insufficient improvement of ongoing human trafficking problems in a number of Thailand’s industries, including its seafood industry. The TIP Report highlights the existence of forced labour, human trafficking, and other abuses on Thai vessels that harvest wild fish for Thai shrimp feed, and the Guardian articles have connected those supply chains to leading producers and retailers. The UK seafood industry is taking this issue very seriously and there are moves to ensure that each link in the supply chain is not implicated in any form of labour abuse. Whilst there is a fundamental need to improve the situation this document highlights the positive movement for change that is underway.

Discarding in the North Sea and on the historical efficacy of gear-based technical measures in reducing discards

We describe and analyse newly available catch and discard data from the English andWelsh fishing fleet operating in the North Sea. In this fleet we estimate that between 2003 and 2006 discard rates averaged 36% by number and 25% by weight. Additionally, we analyse historical discard data from the fleet to evaluate the efficacy of square-mesh panels and increases in codend mesh size. These various gear-based technical measures have been introduced into the fisheries for the purpose of reducing discarding; we demonstrate that these technical measures have been effective in this respect. SR690 Potential Implications of the Landing Obligation on onshore seafood supply chains in the UK.

The aim of the work is to analyse the impact of the landing obligation in a whole supply chain context, and from financial, legal, operational and market perspectives. This project will:- •Map the UK supply chain and identify existing and perceived issues for each sector. •Assess the impact of issues in respect of changes in policy •Discuss potential consequences for each sector; for example, changes in operational behaviour, policy issues, loss of supply or loss of market. •Identify gaps in information and suggest better use of existing information. The analyses will be mainly qualitative.
