Discard and Effort Survey - Channel ICES Areas Viid and e 1995
Fishery resources in the English Channel are subject to a high level of exploitation by an increasingly mobile and flexible fishing fleet. Resource availability has become dependent upon recruitment variability. Effort is directed onto both quota and non quota species according to availability of resources and quota under the EC Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Fishery resources are targeted by a variety of metiers and landed to ports in a number of nations. Management regimes and market conditions may vary nationally, regionally and seasonlly. -
Technical Assessment of Multiple Bodied Trawl Development Project
The Highlands and Islands Enterprise Network approached the Sea Fish Industry Authority to provide a technical assessment for a grant application they had received. A small net manufacturer based in Thurso applied to develop a new type of multiple bodied trawl which was considered (theoretically) to be more efficient at catching certain species by increasing the total net area without the corresponding increase in resistance. They propose to design, construct and test a model in a flume tank before going on to construcing a full scale trawl for trails on a commercial vessel. The objectives of the assessment were to give an independent and impartial appraisal. -
North Norfolk Coast Fishery - Evaluation of dredges for whelk fishing
The whelk fishery of the North Norfolk Coast is in severe decline with almost all the traditional inshore grounds now devoid of whelks. The nearest productive grounds to Wells-next-the Sea are 30 miles away at Cromer Knoll. This is beyond the range of some vessels and is difficult for others to work. One of the objectives of the exercise was to survey for new grounds. -
Flume Tank Testing of 1:4 scale model trawl doors
This report describes a test procedure to obtain accurate performance curves of model trawl doors in a Flume Tank. The purpose is to establish a consistent method of predicting door performance in order that fishermen and others can be advised of the best size and design of door for a particular net. The performance of a single model trawl door is assessed by measuring the tensions and angles of the warp and bridle which retain the door in a fixed position in the tank. Two coefficients are derived : CL representing lift or spreading force and CD representing the drag force. CL/CD represents a measure of efficiency of the door. The Flume Tank equipment required to measure the necessary parameters is described along with the experimental procedures. Results are given for standard flat and vee doors over a range of angles of attack and heel. This data in the form of CLand CD is used as a base against which to compare the performance of other door types. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
The Fishing Industry of the Faroe Islands - Visit Report
The visit to the Faroese fishing industry was arranged by the Western Isles Fishermens Association. The purpose was to see how another island community with a heavy dependence on fishingin its economy was organised and whether there were any ideas which could be followed through for the benefit of the Western Isles industry. -
Stornoway Fishermans' Co-operative Fish Processing Factory E.C. Hygiene Regulations
The Fish Processing Division of Stornoway Fishermen’s Co-operative operates from a factory building on Esplanade Quay that is leased from the council. Negotiations are currently in hand for the purchase of the factory by the Co-operative. Ground rent is payable to the Pier and Harbour Commission on whose ground the factory stands. The Fish Processing Divisions principal business is in Nephrops and Scallops, but with increasing trade in finfish. The Co-operative wish to expand their production capability and to make it more flexible and efficient to respond to raw material availability on a day to day basis, or to changes in market requirements (for products). This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Visit to Norwegian Halibut Research and Commercial Units
The 1990 halibut hatchery season was the most successful at Seafish Ardtoe to date. During the past year a decision was made to increase the effort by the appointment of two research personnel. The trip took place against this background, with the object of comparing results and experience with halibut units in Norway. -
ICES Area VIIf selectivity Trials. Single Boat Demersal Trawl MFV 'OUR OCEAN HARVESTER' (PZ403)
These trials to measure the selectivity of a trawl in a multi species fishery when fitted with a square mesh panel were carried out on the trawl fishing grounds off North Devon and North Cornwall. The results show an indicative benefit in the use of the panel for round fish but it has been extremely difficult to achieve satisfactory statistical data due to the large number of variables. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Scallop Working Group Briefing Paper PSP and DSP in Bivalve Molluscs
Extensive closures of scallop fisheries were experienced in the summer of 1995 due to toxic algal outbreaks of PSP. This lead to an increase in the need for sample monitoring and a heightened awareness of the problems associated with the toxic algal contamination of bivalve shellfish. This briefing paper was produced for the Scallop Working Group meeting on the 23rd February 1996. It provides some background information about the different types of toxic algae and their effects and outlines the current legal position regarding product standards and monitoring. The Scallop Working Group is a cross sectoral industry group of fishermen's associations, buyers and processors which meets regularly to discuss issues of concern to the scallop industry. -
A Study of Squid and Its Potential in UK Water
This report is aimed to collate the current information available on squid so as to review the basic knowledge of squid and to clarify this fishery and its potential. Included in this report is a review of the animal's biology and fishery, that is to say, the scale of this fishery in the UK, the fishing methods, methods of preservation etc. -
Flume Tank Testing of a Vee Type and two Morgere Otterboards
The EEC Contract TE 1-214 is aimed at a better understanding of otter board design and performance. It is being jointly carried out by three E.C. research institutes - IFREMER (France), DIFTA (Denmark) and Seafish (UK) The work is carried out in the flume tanks operated by the institutes and full scale trials are then carried out at sea on the French research vessl Gwen Drez.
