The Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report is the U.S. Government’s principal diplomatic tool to engage foreign governments on human trafficking. It is also the world’s most comprehensive resource of governmental anti-human trafficking efforts. The U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons report (TIP) 2016 was published on 30 June 2016. This document lists the references to fishing by country.

A Review of Water Disinfection Technology to Determine Suitable Equipment for Use Onboard Boat for the Disinfection of Seawater

Supplies of clean water are essential for the industry to maintain high standards of hygiene and quality. This report is concerned with a review of water disinfection technology, carried out to identify equipment suitable for use at sea for seawater disinfection. The review considers the equipment required, the safety and the estimated costs associated with each treatment. Ionization, chlorination, UV and ozone were identified as being potentially suitable and warranting further investigation. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.

The Effect of Product/Process Variables on the Textural Quality of Formed Fillets and their Market Acceptability

Previous work has shown the technical feasibility of producing formed portions of a variety of accurately controlled sizes and shapes from under-utilised or undervalued white fish species. The process and product were shown to have distinct production and marketing advantages, the tight control of portion weight being particularly advantageous to the catering trade, but there was adverse comment from the trade on the ‘rubbery’ texture of the portions produced. This project was to determine the cause of and to rectify the problem of texture, and to investigate the acceptability to the consumer of portions formed from low cost raw material of various white fish species. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.

A Further Study of Amendment to the UK Fishing Vessel Licensing System: A Capacity Exchange System

Following the technical assessment of three proposed amendments to the UK fishing vessel licensing system, undertaken by Seafish at the request of MAFF and reported in TR 344, a further scheme for control of fleet capacity through restrictive licensing has been studied. The three amendments originally proposed by the Fisheries departments did not reduce capacity to the MAGP targets. The purpose of the further scheme was to see if a measure could be introduced to reduce capacity still more at the time an owner changes from one vessel to another. This scheme is based on the premise that, in order to introduce a new vessel into the fleet, licences of greater vessel capacity must be surrendered. Capacity is measured in terms of a Vessel Capacity Unit (VCU) formulation (VCU = L*B+0.45Kw), and derogation would be given for the direct replacement of a lost vessel. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.

Development of a Small Scale Vertical Stack Oyster Purification Plant with Repeated Re-Use of Artificial Seawater

Further development toward a standard design small scale vertical stack purification plant has been made and the re-use of artificial seawater has been successfully demonstrated during 15 successive pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) purification trials. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Initial Trials to Increase Acoustic Detectability of Drift Nets used in the Albacore Tuna Fishery

The drift net fishery for Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) has been criticised for its alleged by-catch of small cetaceans which include dolphins. If it is possible to make a tuna drift net acoustically very detectable to dolphins then their risk of entanglement in the net is likely to be reduced. At the request of UK fishermen's organisations, Seafish and Loughborough University conducted a joint sea trial in Cornwall to examine some of the practicalities of increasing the acoustic detectability of a tuna drift net. The work concluded that it was possible to achieve an increased acoustic detectability by means of passive reflectors attached to the net, but this was at the expense of an efficient deployment of the nets and was unacceptable to fishermen. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Supplement to SR324 - A study of the probable future fisher usage of the ports of Burghead, Buckie and Macduff

This report has to be read in conjunction with SR324 and provides supplementary information on how the capacity of the Buckie ice plant can be increased, how the Buckie market can be improved and the details and costs for insulation the Macduff market. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. A Report to the Fish Industry Forum on The Marine Stewardship Council and Related Topics

The work reported here was instigated by the Fish Forum at its meeting in July 1998. The terms of reference were: ‘ . . to produce a paper . . to cover the ownership, independence and functions of the MSC, a discussion of the demand for and problems associated with eco-labelling, and a commentary on the Nordic Council Proposal made at a recent meeting in Bremen.’

A study of the Sales/Marketing of Demersal Landings at UK Ports and the potential of Electronic Marketing Systems

This report examines existing practices and problems with the port sale and marketing of fresh demeral species in the UK and the need to make producers more responsive to market requirements. It examines UK industry structures, sales methods and the efficiency of the sales systems to reward good marketing practice (quality, supply, forward information, traceability etc). It compares them with systems in use elsewhere in Europe. The major constraints to the introduction of new systems are identified as opposition from vested commercial interests and problems in establishing the conditions necessary for their success, particularly, grading and weighing.

A Study of the Catch Composition, Effort Levels and Discard Rates in the English Set Net Fisheries during 1992/3

This report describes the results of a year's study of the static net fisheries of the NE, SE and SW coasts of England. Length/frequency distributions of the catch are described and percentage discard rates estimated. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.

Exploratory Fishing Trials for Buccinum undatum around the Island of Barra and South Uist in the Western Isles

This report presents the results of exploratory fishing trips undertaken between Sept 1996 and June 1997 to assess catch rates and composition of whelks (Buccinum undatum and Neptuna antiqua)in locations around the Western Isles. Buccinum was captured routinely at all loctions indicating a widespread occurrence throughout the two survey areas, whereas Neptuna was caught predominantly offshore, in deep water. However, the catch per effort was extremely low, and the areas investigated cannot be regarded as being able to support whelk fisheries. The predominance of animals with large and heavily fouled shells suggests the existence of an ageing population which, probably, would be unable to withstand sustained fishing effort. Furthermore, fishing opportunities would be severely restricted by potential conflict with other fisheries, in terms of seasonal access to grounds.
