    Exploratory Voyage by DET 'Swanella'

In the Autumn of 1973 the diesel electric stern trawler SWANELLA was chartered on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for an exploratory fishing voyage in deep water to the West and North West of the British Isles. The areas in question have not hitherto been exploited by commercial fishing vessels but in the twelve months prior to SWANELLA’s voyage they had been surveyed in part by fishery Research Vessel CIROLANA. Mobile Fish Retailing

With the number of mobile retailers increasing during the past decade, this project involving the operation of such a unit, was aimed at defining the parameters of van design in relation to different types of market served. This report gives the information obtained, of the necessary and desirable features in the specification of a van designed to offer good quality fish for sale at the right temperature and in hygienic conditions. The sales information gained from the different sites used was less extensive than hoped, mainly due to the need to avoid situations in which the trials might inadvertently compete with the existing trade. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.

Recent Developments in Japanese Oyster Culture Industry

This report describes recent developments and changes in the Japanese oyster industry which have occurred over the last decade. The last full review of the Japanese oyster industry was published in 1950 (Cahn 1950). A description of the Hiroshima oyster culture system was published by Korringa (1976) from observations he made during 1971 to 1973. This report attempts to describe the more recent and future trends of the industry. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Box Washing and Handling system

The Aberdeen Fishing Vessel Owners’ Association have, for a number of years, operated a Box Pool within the Port of Aberdeen. The boxes, owned by the Box Pool, were until recently, wooden market trunks, capable of containing 8 stones of fish. They were delivered to the Fish market during the night to meet the estimated demand of the subsequent landing. After the sale, the boxes were taken to the Merchants’ fish-houses from whence they were uplifted by the Box Pool’s own collection service during the afternoon and taken to their premises on Albert quay. Recognising the longer term need to restructure their Box Pool, the A.F.V.O.A. had engaged MAS on several occasions over the past five years to undertake studies concerning the operation of the Pool under different sets of circumstances. A comparative costing exercise covering a number of different washing systems, operated on the continent as well as the UK, resulted in the drawing up of a general specification for a washing machine, which would enable the Box Pool to offer an economical services at their existing site, while producing a thoroughly clean box. Introduction of the Marine Laboratory Designed 4 Panel Bottom Trawl to the British Distant Water and Inshore Fishing Industries

Detailed studies of the design, construction and performance of traditional trawls and experiments investigating those factors controlling the geometry of trawls have been made by the staff of the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen. Techniques allowing observation of the behaviour of fish in these fishing gears have been developed and consequent understanding of the way in which fish are caught has grown over a similar period. The knowledge accumulated from these studies has been applied during the last three years to the development of a family of 4 panel trawls. The aims of this development have been to produce a practical fishing gear having the same or preferably a higher catching power than the traditional trawls but with greater mechanical efficiency and ease of handling. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.

Further Acceptability Trials with Farmed Turbot

Following on from the acceptability work carried out in London during the summer of 1974, further trials with farmed turbot from the Authority’s Marine Fish Cultivation Unit at Hunterston in Ayrshire, were conducted in different sections of the fish retail trade including wet fish wholesalers, a frozen fish processor and distributor, fishmongers, restaurants and hotels. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Summary of Market Research Carried out to Determine the Market Potential & Market Opportunities for Fresh Mackerel in the UK

Rapid increases in mackerel landings during the last 3 years – to a point approaching 10% of the total UK catch – have not been matched by corresponding growth in the home market, with the result that this protein rich species is seriously under-utilised in terms of human consumption in the UK. As part of an on-going programme to discover the market potential and market opportunities for mackerel the Market Development Unit of the White Fish Authority (WFA) contracted the services of marketing and advertising consultants, David Elliott & Associates, to conduct research into housewives’ attitudes towards mackerel and ways in which it was used. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies.
