Storage Trials of Vacuum Packed White Fish

When kept under chill conditions vacuum packed cod fillets could be stored for up to 8 days before sour flavours were detected. Whole plaice could be similarly stored for up to 10 days. A novel vacuum packing technique using very simple equipment and a valved pouch looks promising.

    Instrumented Trials on 'Destiny'

A Seafish trials team carried out an instrumented sea trial in December 1989 to investigate the causes of excessive exhaust temperature on the main propulsion engine. A report on these trials was produced as CR7. It was confirmed that the engine was not subject to overload in any of its fishing or steaming modes. The worst situations involved seining activitiers in which the engine was required to provide power to the jhydraulic seine winch and rope reels while running at low speeds (500 to 700 engine revs/min) in order to limit forward thrust from the propeller.

    Development in Pollution Control Legislation

This one day conference was attended by approximately 40 delegates, most of whom came from industries with effluents discharging into the air and aquatic environment. The speakers described developments in pollution control. These ranged from changes in pollution legislation to companies taking on board 'green issues' as part of their image. The effect of these changes should be improvements in the information available to the public on environmental matters.

An Investigation into the Use of Flume Tank Tests for Codend Models - Scale Range 1:2.0 to 1:2.7

This is a description of the Flume Tank tests on three variants of a model codend to see how the tank could be used to carry out preliminary assessments of different codends. This would be beneficial to the selectivity programme and could reduce expensive time consuming sea trials. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.

Trials to determine the nitrogen factor of both UK and Imported fillet and minced cod blocks

A code of Practice on the declaration and labelling of fish content in fishery products was recently drawn up by participants from Industry and Enforcement Agencies. Enforcement officers will use this Code of Practice wherever there is a need to consider the correct declaration of fish content. The Code currently contains interim nitrogen factors for fish ingredient (used to determine fish content) which have been obtained by reducing the available data on nitrogen content of fish straight from the sea by amounts thought to accord with the effect of good manufacturing practice (GMP). There is a need to carry out trials to determine the actual nitrogen content of GMP products to replace these interim values. This report is concerned with trials carried out between December 2001 and September 2003 to determine the nitrogen factor of fish ingredient of double frozen fillet and mince blocks produced under GMP in the UK. Sampling took into account both seasionality and raw-material capture area. In addition, samples were taken at key stages to determine the effect of processing. Trials were also carried out to determine the nitrogen factor of the equivalent single and double frozen blocks imported into the UK from five different countries.
