A case study review of the potential impact of proposed CFP discard reform. Poseidon report to Seafish UK, 2013

The reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) introduces a landing obligation to eliminate discarding. The objective of this research, was to determine the potential economic implications of this discards ban on selected case study UK fleets through establishing a) how would the landing obligation affect fleet economic performance, b) at fleet level, and given current discards, what would the quota requirements amount to, and c) identify any ‘choke’ species that could limit operations of the fleet. The report highlights two key aspects of the landings obligation: the restricting effect of so-called “choke” species, and a lack of clarity surrounding the permitted flexibilities contained within the legislation. The results confirm what we already thought: much work remains to be done in order to ensure that we have a fishing fleet which operates sustainably, profitably and in line with the recently agreed landings obligation.

FS18-12.08 Dec 2008 Fuel Flow Meters

This work investigated the accuracy and precision of fuel flow meters that may be used on commercial fishing vessels to give real-time indication of engine fuel economy during operations. The study looked into the most accurate way to meter fuel consumption on a commercial fishing vessel, the cost of this to fishermen, how straightforward the device would be to fit on a fishing vessel and whether the sensors are suited to the demanding environmental conditions onboard fishing vessels. Looking at six different meters the study concluded the best all round performer was the oval gear positive displacement meter, the Flowtech Oval MIII. When the temperature increase in the return fuel line is significant and the cost can be justified by the rating of the engine, Coriollis mass flow rate meters should provide accurate and repeatable fuel consumption figures.

Response to Consultation on Scotland’s National Marine Plan: Pre-Consultation Draft

Seafish welcomes several of the proposals in the draft plan, such as making sustainability a main aim and proposing to plan inshore and offshore areas together. However the draft contains several issues of concern. These include a disjoint between Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the Common Fisheries Policy; shellfish farming in the context of water quality; the intention to use the terrestrial model as a basis for marine planning; the absence of policy priorities; and the absence of temporal planning as a possible planning tool.

Maximising the quality and storage life of fresh seafood products

Seafood is highly perishable, this means that unless there has been an intervention which changes the physical nature of the product, such as freezing, cooking, drying, smoking or canning, fresh seafood products will continually deteriorate in quality over time. Visual and physical changes effect the consumer’s perception of the product to the eventual point where it would be considered unappealing or even inedible. This briefing note is aimed at businesses that catch, process, buy, sell or trade fresh seafood products; it seeks to improve the understanding of those factors that cause the natural deterioration of seafood products due to spoilage, and to ensure that businesses are able to mitigate and remediate those changes as far as possible to ensure that the maximum storage lives for their products are achieved.
