Further Evaluation of Square Mesh Panels to Improve Selectivity for Cod in Demersal Trawls
The report describes the most recent in a series of attempts to improve the release rates of sub legal cod from trawls. The work was carried out under MAFF Commission MF0612. In the main part of the trials square mesh side panels were used but they seemed to offer little, if any benefit. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Quality Audit of the Port of North Shields - August 1997
This report presents the findings of a Quality Audit of the fishing port of North Shields. The audit examined the quality of raw material supplied to the port, standards of physical infrastrcture, operating practices and management controls. -
Weighing/Grading at Sea Trials aboard MFV Craigmillar
This report summarises the results of the weighing/grading at sea trials carried out aboard the CRAIGMILLAR (MFV) during week ended 10 March 1987. The principal objective of the exercise was to introduce iced, weighed and graded at sea fish in plastic boxes into the auction sale system at Fleetwood with a view to improving home landings in terms of quality and presentation and thus raising the average market value of sales. -
An Analysis of Fish Quality & Temperature Data from a Survey of UK Ports
This report, prepared as supplementary information for an MSc thesis describes the methodology used for the 1985 SFIA Port quality survey, presents a model of quality change at varying temperatures, analyses the survey data for the effects of the various handling practices in use aboard vessels and at the ports, and presents an estimate of the UK distribution of the quality of fish at first sale (see also IR 1294). -
Observations and Trials of Fish Handling on Small Vessels - Stage 2 (incomplete)
This project acknowledges the need for improvement in the quality of fish from inshore vessels, the majority of which are small and operate as day trip boats. The large fleet of inshore vessels under 16.5m lands an estimated value of fish of at least £100 million per annum. However, the quality of a proportion of this catch is often far from what it could be due to lack of facilities and temperature control. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

A Technical Study of Fish Processing in the UK
This report examines primary processing in the UK during the middle 1980s. Its purpose is to provide a frank appraisal of the industry and with other food industries and overseas fish processors. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
An Introductory Guide to Cultivation of the Queen Scallop
This manual was prepared for a course in shellfish cultivation held at the MFU in March 1987. It is aimed at the new entrant into fish farming giving advice on the basic biology of queen scallops, the equipment needed and some of the problems which will be encountered in marketing farmed products. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
A Detailed Study of Chilled Fish Retailing in the UK
The report gives a detailed presentation and analysis of the technical, legislative and financial aspects of chilled fish retailing. The information provides a database for use in the production of guidelines. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish -
Static Fishing Nets - Experiments to reduce unwanted bycatch and bottom debris
In August 1987, Seafish carried out sea trials to assess the efficiency of trammel nets constructed of a number of alternative materials IR1341 refers. One of the main objectives of the work was to assess the effectiveness of monofilament nylon used in the construction of trammel nets with the aim of reducing net clearing time by making it more easy to remove crabs and bottom debris. -
Improving the post harvest care of small shrimp
Initial investigations have shown that it is possible for shrimp cooked at sea to meet the temperature requirements of both the Food Hygiene (Amendment) Regulations for cooked products and E.C. Fishery Products Directive, which willcome into force in January 1993. This is by the use of direct and indirect icing and insulated fish boxes to hold the cooked shrimp, on board vessel. Icing the cooked shrimp at sea also significantly extends the subsequent storage life of the product. It has also been shown possible to hold uncooked brown shrimp in ice onboard and then transfer the cooking operation ashore and produce a satisfactory product. However, during these initial trials this practice was not found to be satisfactory with pink shrimp. -
Mussel Purification - Further Developments of a Scale Deep Stack Purification Tank
Following earlier trials the very high density deep stack purification tank initially developed by David Coulson and Mick Butler has been improved and in particular the water flow rate increased yet further. In a series of 6 purification trials the effectiveness of the tank has been demonstrated provided that tank loading is limited, water flow rate is high, temperature is controlled and water re-use is limited. The tank has been granted a provisional operating licence. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.
