An investigation into the possibilities for improvement in fishing industry facilities at Poole

Development of the area of sheltered moorings known as Fishermen’s Dock was proposed in 1982. Subsequently, Poole Harbour Commissioners questioned the ability of the local fishermen to service a loan which would be required to meet costs. Official statistics greatly under-estimate landings and landed value and this has been confirmed by an SFIA investigation. This study also suggests alternative improvement schemes and modifications to the ‘dock’ scheme. Conclusions are reached on the ability of the full time fishermen to pay for the necessary loan based on a sampling of boat’s earnings in a study of costings for the Fishermen’s Dock and some assumed costs for modified schemes. Stress Measurement during launch of the M.V. Bromley Pearl - H991

In 1990, SFIA were invited by Richard Dunston (Hessle) Limited to submit a quotaion for the measurement of stresses induced at the launch of the above vessel. The stresses were to be measured by means of resistive strain gauges at nine locations (six on the main deck and three on the tank top) and records of strain levels maintained for subsequent analysis.

A study of the lobster population of Poole Bay, Dorset

As a part of the ongoing development of the Wytch Farm oilfield, British Petroleum are proposing to recover the offshore reserves by use of an artificial island which would house the drilling and extraction equipment. This would be sited in Poole Bay on seabed of low productivity. To enhance the fishery in the area BP are investigating the possibility of a lobster stock enhancement scheme centred on the island.

Mussel Purification - Further Developments of a Scale Deep Stack Purification Tank

Following earlier trials the very high density deep stack purification tank initially developed by David Coulson and Mick Butler has been improved and in particular the water flow rate increased yet further. In a series of 6 purification trials the effectiveness of the tank has been demonstrated provided that tank loading is limited, water flow rate is high, temperature is controlled and water re-use is limited. The tank has been granted a provisional operating licence. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. An Analysis of Fish Quality & Temperature Data from a Survey of UK Ports

This report, prepared as supplementary information for an MSc thesis describes the methodology used for the 1985 SFIA Port quality survey, presents a model of quality change at varying temperatures, analyses the survey data for the effects of the various handling practices in use aboard vessels and at the ports, and presents an estimate of the UK distribution of the quality of fish at first sale (see also IR 1294).

Proceedings of the Humber Waste Seminar, 12 June 1997

These are the papers submitted at the Seafish Humber Waste Seminar, held at TC's club in Grimsby on 12 June 1997. Recommendations and findings are based on surveys carried out at a number of fish processing companies in the Humberside region. This collection of papers aims to provide an introduction to relevant waste issues and highlights some areas where waste minimisation can be put into practice. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.
