Comparison of results in Turbot R & D to November 1978, with previous performance forecasts 1975 & 1977.
Early White Fish Authority experience of farming marine flatfish in sea cages was gained with plaice (1969 – 1973). From 1971 attention was increasingly turned to turbot, a species considered to be more attractive to farm commercially (Refs 1-3) and a number of small scale growth trials were performed with wild origin stock in order to obtain basic growth and husbandry data. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
The Results of a Water and Effluent Study carried out at G W Latus Limited in September 1997
In the near future new environmental legislation will add greatly to the cost and difficulty of disposing of waste water, which will present a significant problem to the fish industry. Seafish has commissioned a number of water audits in fish processing companies, to look at water usage and effluent production, with a view to minimising both. This report is concerned with the audit of G. W. Latus Limited. -
Evaluation of Mesh Measurement Methodologies for Fisheries Inspection and Research (MESH) FAIR-CT96-1452_TASK 1
In the first task of the project each partner has to review the mesh measurement procuedures used in his organisation. Seafish staff identified four types of gauges, the wedge gauge, the ICES gauges, the digimatic vernier gauge and the tape measure. The method of application of each method is described including the selection of meshes and force applied. -
The Results of a Water and Effluent Study carried out at Richard Coulbeck Limited in August 1997
In the near future new environmental legislation will add greatly to the cost and difficulty of disposing of waste water, which will present a significant problem to the fish industry. seafish has commissioned a number of water audits in fish processing companies, to look at water usage and effluent production, with a view to minimising both. -
Sea Trials on a 150H.P. Dual Purpose Trawl (Model - Full Scale Correlation)
This report describes sea trials carried out aboard MFV Sydo on a dual purpose prawn/whitefish trawl of 500 x 90mm mesh fishing circle. The Sydo is a 46ft trawler with a 170 h.p. Gardner engine. The purpose was to gather technical data on the gear performance to a high enough standard to use for a model - full scale correlation exercise. -
Cooling of Cooked and Smoked Fish in Retail Displays - Report of Laboratory Trials
From April 1993 Retailers will find it difficult to comply with the Food Hygiene (Amendment) Regs which will require mongers to keep cooked and smoked fish products at or below 5 degrees centigrade. These products cannot be directly iced because of the adverse effect of appearance and texture. This work was carrid out with the aim of developing a simple, inexpensive storage and display system for these products in a retail environment, applicable to both shops and retail vans. -
Investigations into the Corrosion Problems Associated with the Fishroom Chilling System - MFV
This report describes the investigations into the problem of accelerated corrosion of the copper pipework, located at the top of the fishroom and also in the shelterdeck area on MFV 'Challenge II'. Similar problems were experienced on MFV 'Seagull' and the laboratory report into samples from that vessel suggested hydrogen sulphide attack. -
BP Exploration Fishing Activities in Way of Forties Pipeline Route
The pipeline route passes through four ICES 'statistical rectanle' areas. Each statistical rectangle comprises an area bounded by one degree of longitude and one half degree of latitude. The rectangles are defined by Sea Area (IVa is the Northern North Sea and IVb is the Central North Sea) together with a number for each individual rectangle. The dividing line between Northern and Central North Sea Areas lies at latitude 57 o 30'N and is crossed by the pipeline. -
The Development of a Bulk Bin, Deep Layer, Down Welling, Mussel Purification System
This report describes the development of a bulk bin, mussel purification system which has been developed by Seafish. Work on this project has been underway for a number of years. It started with small scale trials conducted at the Seafish Fish Laboratory in Hull and has lead to the development of the first commercial plant at Myti Mussels in North Wales. This report outlines the physical parameters required to depurate mussels in deep layers. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
The Cuttlefish (Sepia officianalis) A guide to its exploitation in UK waters
This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. See also Seafish Report SR465. -
Weighing/Grading at Sea Trials aboard MFV Craigmillar
This report summarises the results of the weighing/grading at sea trials carried out aboard the CRAIGMILLAR (MFV) during week ended 10 March 1987. The principal objective of the exercise was to introduce iced, weighed and graded at sea fish in plastic boxes into the auction sale system at Fleetwood with a view to improving home landings in terms of quality and presentation and thus raising the average market value of sales. -
Further Evaluation of Square Mesh Panels to Improve Selectivity for Cod in Demersal Trawls
The report describes the most recent in a series of attempts to improve the release rates of sub legal cod from trawls. The work was carried out under MAFF Commission MF0612. In the main part of the trials square mesh side panels were used but they seemed to offer little, if any benefit. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish.
