Design and Commission of a Mussel Purification Plant at Kings Lynn
This report describes the design and installation of an eight tank mussel purification plant at Kings Lynn. This followed successful trials of a prototype tank incorporating multi-layer stacking and partial reuse of artificial seawater. The operation of the plant is described together with the results of monitoring at higher water temperatures than those previously used. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Observations and Trials of Fish Handling on Small Vessels - Stage 2 (incomplete)
This project acknowledges the need for improvement in the quality of fish from inshore vessels, the majority of which are small and operate as day trip boats. The large fleet of inshore vessels under 16.5m lands an estimated value of fish of at least £100 million per annum. However, the quality of a proportion of this catch is often far from what it could be due to lack of facilities and temperature control. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Methods of transportation for scallops Pecten maximus
Physiological stress and subsequent mortality of scallop spat, overwintered and 2 year old scallops in relation to transportation method are assessed. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
More prawns and fewer cod caught in trials with multi-rig prawn trawl (2009)
This work provides new data on the relative selective properties of multi-rig prawn trawls trialed in the North Sea may be of interest to fishermen, scientists and managers in situations where cod protection is of particular interest. -
Storage Trials of Vacuum Packed White Fish
When kept under chill conditions vacuum packed cod fillets could be stored for up to 8 days before sour flavours were detected. Whole plaice could be similarly stored for up to 10 days. A novel vacuum packing technique using very simple equipment and a valved pouch looks promising. -
An Investigation into the Use of Flume Tank Tests for Codend Models - Scale Range 1:2.0 to 1:2.7
This is a description of the Flume Tank tests on three variants of a model codend to see how the tank could be used to carry out preliminary assessments of different codends. This would be beneficial to the selectivity programme and could reduce expensive time consuming sea trials. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Trials to determine the nitrogen factor of both UK and Imported fillet and minced cod blocks
A code of Practice on the declaration and labelling of fish content in fishery products was recently drawn up by participants from Industry and Enforcement Agencies. Enforcement officers will use this Code of Practice wherever there is a need to consider the correct declaration of fish content. The Code currently contains interim nitrogen factors for fish ingredient (used to determine fish content) which have been obtained by reducing the available data on nitrogen content of fish straight from the sea by amounts thought to accord with the effect of good manufacturing practice (GMP). There is a need to carry out trials to determine the actual nitrogen content of GMP products to replace these interim values. This report is concerned with trials carried out between December 2001 and September 2003 to determine the nitrogen factor of fish ingredient of double frozen fillet and mince blocks produced under GMP in the UK. Sampling took into account both seasionality and raw-material capture area. In addition, samples were taken at key stages to determine the effect of processing. Trials were also carried out to determine the nitrogen factor of the equivalent single and double frozen blocks imported into the UK from five different countries.
