Storage Trials of Vacuum Packed White Fish
When kept under chill conditions vacuum packed cod fillets could be stored for up to 8 days before sour flavours were detected. Whole plaice could be similarly stored for up to 10 days. A novel vacuum packing technique using very simple equipment and a valved pouch looks promising. -

The report follows a workshop hosted at FAI Farms in Oxford, which brought together seafood industry actors, scientists and technology developers from across a variety of disciplines, with the goal of creating and building support for innovative selective harvest design concepts, with the potential to transform the wild-caught seafood sector. -
Fishing Trials to Evaluate the Use of Square Mesh Selector Panels Fitted to Nephrops Trawls - MFV 'HEATHER SPRIG' (BCK 181) - November/December 1990
The sea trials on the 'HEATHER SPRIG' were to assess the effectiveness of a square mesh window in the extension of a Nephrop dual purpose trawl. 80 mm and 70 mm panels were fitted within the 70 mm diamond mesh and comparisons of discards rates measured using the twin rig trawl technique. Both panels substantially reduced discards of whiting and haddock although latter was not a dominant species during the fishing period. The Development of a Suitable Synthetic Replacement for the Traditional Cotton Drift Nets as Utilised in the Cornish Pilchard Fishery
Much work has been conducted by the Sea Fish Industry Authority into studying the potential of the currently under-exploited pilchard resources (Sardina pilchardus) present off the shores of south est England. Some twenty years ago the pilchard fishery formed the backbone of the economies of cornish fishing ports. today however, the pilchard is largely overlooked. -
A Further Study of Amendment to the UK Fishing Vessel Licensing System: A Capacity Exchange System
Following the technical assessment of three proposed amendments to the UK fishing vessel licensing system, undertaken by Seafish at the request of MAFF and reported in TR 344, a further scheme for control of fleet capacity through restrictive licensing has been studied. The three amendments originally proposed by the Fisheries departments did not reduce capacity to the MAGP targets. The purpose of the further scheme was to see if a measure could be introduced to reduce capacity still more at the time an owner changes from one vessel to another. This scheme is based on the premise that, in order to introduce a new vessel into the fleet, licences of greater vessel capacity must be surrendered. Capacity is measured in terms of a Vessel Capacity Unit (VCU) formulation (VCU = L*B+0.45Kw), and derogation would be given for the direct replacement of a lost vessel. Initial Trials to Increase Acoustic Detectability of Drift Nets used in the Albacore Tuna Fishery
The drift net fishery for Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) has been criticised for its alleged by-catch of small cetaceans which include dolphins. If it is possible to make a tuna drift net acoustically very detectable to dolphins then their risk of entanglement in the net is likely to be reduced. At the request of UK fishermen's organisations, Seafish and Loughborough University conducted a joint sea trial in Cornwall to examine some of the practicalities of increasing the acoustic detectability of a tuna drift net. The work concluded that it was possible to achieve an increased acoustic detectability by means of passive reflectors attached to the net, but this was at the expense of an efficient deployment of the nets and was unacceptable to fishermen.
