Separating fish from prawns in bottom trawls
The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, commonly called the “prawn”, is widely distributed around the UK and is the main species for a number of important trawl fisheries. The animals are caught by specially designed light bottom trawls with a small mesh, on grounds where the seabed usually consists of fine cohesive mud in which they excavate burrows. But in many Nephrops fisheries because of the small mesh, there can be a significant by-catch of white fish, often of undersized commercial species. This is particularly true in the Irish Sea with whiting and the Bay of Biscay with hake. It would, therefore, make a lot of sense from the point of view of conservation if, when trawling for Nephrops, this catch could be separated from the undersized fish and moreover only those fish of marketable size retained. -

Line Ripping Trials with Automated Equipment (Jigging)
Ripping (or Jigging) is the fishing method in which a weighted line with a number of hooks is lowered into a shoal of feeding fish. The hooks are disguised with colouired lures to attract the fish and the line is moved rapidly up and down. This has traditionally been a handline fishery, but new equipment from Scandinavia has now fully automated the process at very reasonable cost. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Further investigations into selectivity and separator trawls
This report describes the most recent in a series of trials investigating the selectivity performance of separator trawls. The twin warp nets were deployed simultaneously on a twin rig trawler in the Moray Firth over a two week period. Four different cod end mesh sizes were used in a number of combinations. The catch from each of the four cod ends were identified and measured. The catch data were analysed to determine the extent of vertical separation for each species and the size selectivity of each codend. Good separation was found and some useful observations made as to the influence of fish size on separation and cod end position on selectivity. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Towing Power Efficiency
This project has been undertaken with a view to establishing relationships between the different factors which might improve or impair the effectiveness of a fishing vessel in the trawling mode. The intention is to provide a set of factors which can be applied to the basic specifications of a fishing vessel to give an accurate indication of its towing performance. A possible application is seen in the transfer or aggregation of fishing vessel licences and in which the current indicator of towing performance (or vessel capacity) is expressed solely in terms of physical dimensions of the vessel and the installed power of its propulsion engine. No account is taken of the utilisation of power on the vessel. Similarly indices of total fleet ‘capacity’ are maintained on a basis of reference to total displacement or installed propulsion power and thus fail to take account of any factors which might alter the relationship between these parameters and actual performance of the fleet. In either case, a means of accurately modifying the traditional methods of assessing performance of individual vessels should provide an option of more accurately controlling the changes in structure of the fleet. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Mollusc Purification Plant
Viviers (UK) Limited have installed a new purification tank at their premises in Portsmouth to give more flexibility to their existing operation. They contracted Seafish, under their mollusc purification advisory service, to comment on the tanks ability to meet MAFF design criteria, a site visit being made on 5th March. Of G.R.P. construction the tank was found to meet most of the design criteria, the exceptions being a much higher water exchange rate than that normally required and the absence of a water heater. These were not considered to be problems with this particular design of tank. This report describes the purification tank design and operation and concludes that it meets the basic technical requirements and will cleanse bivalve molluscs to the required standard. -

Norovirus and Bivalve Molluscs
Noroviruses are a group of viruses that are the most common cause of gastroenteritis or stomach bugs, often referred to as the ‘winter vomiting virus’. Food borne transmission via bivalve shellfish (mainly contaminated raw oysters) is one (but the least likely) way of contracting norovirus. The number of people in the UK who contract norovirus from eating live bivalve molluscs is very small and numbers are not increasing. This fact sheet looks specifically at the harvesting of live bivalve molluscs, routes of norovirus contamination and treatment options available to reduce contamination levels. -

Mussel Stocking Density Trials
During 1987 spatted mussel collector ropes were used as a basis for a suspended cultivation trial to determine the effects of reduced stocking density on the production of marketable size mussels. Excess spat were retubed for ongrowing in Pergolari mesh and marketable yields were compared with those for rope cultivation. Results clearly indicated that reducing stock density and retubing the excess gave a considerable increase in yields of marketable size mussels. Working towards better water quality in partnership with aquaculture
Shellfish harvesting areas are classified as ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ depending on the level of E.coli found in the shellfish. Category ‘A’ production areas can go straight to market without any treatment. Shellfish from category ‘B’ harvesting areas need to be Depurated or relayed. Category ‘C’ shellfish have to be heat treated. This paper shows the elevation of E.coli associated with cattle having access to water courses. Remedial action by restricting assess by adequate fencing and control of these animals reduces the microbial burden on shellfish production areas. Kilkeel Fishmarket Extension
The Northern Ireland Fishing Harbour Authority (NIFHA) is currently committed to a programme of harbour works at Kilkeel that involve the extension of quay walls and the market building to improve the operations of unloading, sale and lay-by berthing of boats. Seafish were requested by the NIFHA to advise upon the structure and configuration of the proposed extension to the existing market in light of the proposed EC Hygiene Regulations. Kilkeel is the largest port on the Co Down Coast and supports a fleet of some 114 vessels in excess of 10m registered length. The value of landings is about £7 million (1988) with nephrops, cod and whiting being the predominant species. This report provides a little background of the intended regulations and of local operational practice, and makes detailed recommendations relating to the hygienic design and construction of the building. It makes specific recommendation for a secure, chilled section of the market for prawn (nephrops) sales. FS3-02.08-Fillet discolouration
Whitefish flesh naturally changes colour with age and depending on how it has been handled after capture. Initially, whitefish species such as cod and haddock have a blue, translucent colouration, which changes to white after a couple of days. After this the flesh can become yellow and then brown but it is generally considered inedible before it changes into these colours. However there are also other reasons as to why fish flesh can be classed as discoloured. This factsheet provides a very basic summary about the reasons for colour changes in whitefish. -

Free of flesh shell - further trials
The findings of previous work to define free of flesh shell showed that whilst many shellfish types could be effectively cleaned some species were both hard to clean and difficult to assess their 'free of flesh' status due to high residual test levels of flesh test parameters within shells. This follow on project builds on the previous work, to help find a way forward in developing an alternative testing protocol based upon the use of a leach methodology and to explore options for a combination cleaning process which can produce FOF shell for difficult to clean shell types such as crab. -

Recommendations are made on the loading and operation of the plant on the basis of montiroing of dissolved oxygen levels. -
Aggregate Dredging Fishery Perspectives
The extraction of marine aggregates for civil construction use has increased dramatically in the last five years. There are strict procedures governing the issue of prospecting and extraction licences to dredging companies. Crown Estates Commissioners are the responsible Authority. This report highlights procedures but also draws attention to the risks posed by these activities to fishing interests. Turbot Hatchery Production 1981
During 1981 a total of 988,900 day one (dl) turbot larvae commenced rearing at the Hatchery at the Marine Farming Unit, Ardtoe. These comprised of 544,600 larvae from WFA spawning stocks at Ardtoe and Hunterston and 434,400 larvae originating at Scottish Sea Farms Hatchery at South Shian. In addition, a batch of 19,000 turbot/brill hybrid larvae was received from MAFF Lowestoft. Larval rearing methods closely followed those of 1980. The eggs produced at Ardtoe in 1981 (6.5% hatching rate) were of poorer quality than those of 1980 (16% hatching rate). This almost certainly reflected mortalities among proven female spawners between the two seasons. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish -
Alternative Stimulation in Fisheries
The objective of this concerted action is to review current knowledge of fish behaviour and the stimuli to which they react. One aim of the review is to reveal where improvements might be made to current practice in fisheries. Question might be: is there an alternative to heavy ground gears that are thought to damage the sea bed perhaps using sound pulses, electric fields, laser beams or water jets? Why do not all fish small enough pass out through grids and square mesh windows built into codend extensions? It is widely recognized that there is a fund of knowledge about fish behaviour as well as the properties of physical and natural stimuli that is not made use of in applied fishing gear technology. -
Brixham Fish Market Study
For a number of years Torbay Council and its partners have been working to put in place an effective plan for the regeneration of the town of Brixham, including the provision of fisheries infrastructures that would ensure the long-term viability of the local fleet and fish-related businesses. Previous studies identified major problems in the port relating to lack of space, poor road access, insufficient parking and inadequate and unhygienic facilities for the landing and sale of fish, its processing and onward distribution. As a first stop to the regeneration of the town, Torbay Development Agency (TDA) is planning a new fish market and landing quay to be built on reclaimed land and for the existing fish market to be upgraded to provide modern hygienic facilities that will accommodate fish processing and storage. -
