Corrosion in Steel Vessels

The Fishing Vessel Propeller
Correct propeller design is critical to successful operation of a trawler. The propeller acts to translate the power produced by the engine into thrust to overcome the resistance of the vessel and to provide a tow rope pull. The extremes of propeller performance are to design a propeller that makes the vessel go as fast as possible; or to design the propeller to give a great amount of pull. Normally a propeller design strikes a compromise between these two extremes. This compromise will depend on the conditions existing in the particular fishery that the vessel operates in. Vessels with long steaming times may require better free running capabilities than those working inshore and requiring larger pulls. The decision on the propeller design point should be made with thought as to the relative profits of the fishing profile and operation of the vessel. If two types of fishing are undertaken for different periods of the year it may be viable to change the propeller to suit each fishery. -

The Seafish Guide to improving Fuel Efficiency
The high cost of fuel is having a dramatic effect on the profitability of many sectors of the UK fishing fleet. Since 2004, the fuel price for fishing vessels has risen from 15p* per litre to more than 56p* a litre in mid 2008 – an increase of almost four times the price (Figure 1). This has left some sectors of the fishing industry struggling to maintain profitability. Seafish is working with Government organisations throughout the UK to provide expert advice - both economic and technical - to mitigate high fuel costs. It is also offering bespoke advice to catchers and vessel owners on fuel efficiency, covering all aspects of their gear and vessel performance. This guide gives a brief overview of eight key areas where significant cost reductions or improvements to efficiency can be made, in conjunction with assistance from Seafish. -

Reuse of seawater for purification systems
Seawater is used in purification systems to keep live bivalve molluscs in good condition. The animals will cleanse themselves of low level bacterial contamination. The seawater that is used can be either raw natural seawater or artificial seawater. Whatever type is used it should not have any microbial contamination in it prior to it entering the purification tanks. For artificial seawater made from salts this is not a problem. For raw seawater some treatment must take place prior to use. There are different rules on the reuse of seawater in purification systems which are explained in this fact sheet. -

FS27-04.09_Fishing vessel fuel emissions
Responding to climate change by reducing both the amount of waste generated, and the amount of toxic substances released into the environment is a smart choice for the fishing industry. Carbon footprints relate to how much Greenhouse gases are emitted. For the fishing sector emissions are influenced by a number of factors including the abundance of fish (stocks), the steaming distance to fishing grounds, and the fishing technology used. But there are options a skipper can adopt to reduce a vessels carbon footprint by reducing fuel consumption. This fact sheet describes the fuel used by the fishing sector, it outlines the current emissions regulations and how these may affect the fishing industry. It also provides an overview of a fishing vessels ‘carbon footprint’ and how it can be improved. -

FS30_05.09 Innovative sensors to determine fish freshness
Fish freshness is typically determined by sensory assessment, which relies on the use of trained assessors. Commonly used schemes include Torry and the Quality Index Method (QIM). The use of non-trained assessors, which is a common occurrence, can lead to highly variable results. As such it is desirable to find an alternative, instrumental method to provide an objective system for determining fish freshness. Ideally any such method should be reliable, rapid, non-destructive and easy to use. A wide number of instrumental techniques have been tested yet few have made it to commercial reality. In this study, several different methods have been used to evaluate cod over time, to assess which has the greatest potential in fish freshness assessment. These included spectroscopy and colour imaging measurement. Campden BRI was funded by Seafish to evaluate the potential of near infra-red spectroscopy and colour measurements as reliable methods of determining fish freshness. NIR measurements were made with a hyperspectral imaging system, and with a conventional bulk system. Colour measurements were made with a calibrated colour imaging system. This factsheet summarises the results. -

Use of discards in bait
Further to the Defra ‘Fishing for the Markets’ initiative, this study explores whether discards from English vessels not destined for human consumption can be utilised in bait in England. Analysis of current discards from the English fleet and the pot bait needs of those targeting crab and lobster showed that the bait market could potentially utilise all discards in England. Commercial sea trials tested the effectiveness of a range of discards species as bait. These identified that virtually all species currently discarded by English fishing vessels could be used as effective pot bait for crabbers. But this was not the case for lobster catches where the sea trials showed a negative impact on the catch rate compared to traditional bait. The study concludes that the use of discards as pot bait will predominantly depend on the cost as they will be competing on price with a range of existing cost-effective baits already used by the potting sector. -

ILO Work in Fishing Convention 188. What it means for the UK fishing industry and those operating in UK waters. July 2019
The International Labour Organization (ILO) Work in Fishing Convention 188 is a global labour standard to ensure fishers have minimum standards and decent conditions of work on board all fishing vessels. It sets responsibilities for owners, skippers and fishers, regardless of their employment status. The Convention establishes minimum requirements for work on board; conditions of service; accommodation and food; occupational safety and health protection; medical care and social security. The UK ratified the Convention in January 2019. This will impact on all aspects of living and working conditions on UK fishing vessels, wherever those vessels are operating. It will also apply to fishing vessels (that are not UK registered vessels) operating in UK waters. The new provisions will be phased in, but many of them applied in the UK from 30 December 2018. This briefing note provides an overview of what is covered by the new legislation and what changes this will bring about. The new legislative requirements have been split into those covering health and safety and those covering working conditions. There is also guidance on where to look for further information. -
