Corrosion in Steel Vessels
Throughout the liefe of a steel fishing boat, the bottom and boot topping plates are exposed to sea waters, either intermittently or completely. Under these conditions, the corrosion is electrochemical in character. If the plate is in good condition the currents produced are relatively small and the resultant corrosion easily controlled. -
The Fishing Vessel Propeller
Correct propeller design is critical to successful operation of a trawler. The propeller acts to translate the power produced by the engine into thrust to overcome the resistance of the vessel and to provide a tow rope pull. The extremes of propeller performance are to design a propeller that makes the vessel go as fast as possible; or to design the propeller to give a great amount of pull. Normally a propeller design strikes a compromise between these two extremes. This compromise will depend on the conditions existing in the particular fishery that the vessel operates in. Vessels with long steaming times may require better free running capabilities than those working inshore and requiring larger pulls. The decision on the propeller design point should be made with thought as to the relative profits of the fishing profile and operation of the vessel. If two types of fishing are undertaken for different periods of the year it may be viable to change the propeller to suit each fishery. -

FS30_05.09 Innovative sensors to determine fish freshness
Fish freshness is typically determined by sensory assessment, which relies on the use of trained assessors. Commonly used schemes include Torry and the Quality Index Method (QIM). The use of non-trained assessors, which is a common occurrence, can lead to highly variable results. As such it is desirable to find an alternative, instrumental method to provide an objective system for determining fish freshness. Ideally any such method should be reliable, rapid, non-destructive and easy to use. A wide number of instrumental techniques have been tested yet few have made it to commercial reality. In this study, several different methods have been used to evaluate cod over time, to assess which has the greatest potential in fish freshness assessment. These included spectroscopy and colour imaging measurement. Campden BRI was funded by Seafish to evaluate the potential of near infra-red spectroscopy and colour measurements as reliable methods of determining fish freshness. NIR measurements were made with a hyperspectral imaging system, and with a conventional bulk system. Colour measurements were made with a calibrated colour imaging system. This factsheet summarises the results. -

Reuse of seawater for purification systems
Seawater is used in purification systems to keep live bivalve molluscs in good condition. The animals will cleanse themselves of low level bacterial contamination. The seawater that is used can be either raw natural seawater or artificial seawater. Whatever type is used it should not have any microbial contamination in it prior to it entering the purification tanks. For artificial seawater made from salts this is not a problem. For raw seawater some treatment must take place prior to use. There are different rules on the reuse of seawater in purification systems which are explained in this fact sheet. -

FS21-0209 Feb 2009 Lured long lines for Bass
The system of long lining for bass using monofilament lines and artificial lures was developed in response to the rise in consumer demand for line caught bass. The system developed allows fishermen to target bass with minimal environmental impact, in waters otherwise commercially unviable due to tidal conditions or restrictions on the use of static nets. This new system was trialled for six months, from May to October 2008, on a licensed 17ft open boat, the MFV Caroline, working daily from the North Devon harbour of Clovelly. This followed independent trials during the 2007 season by Sam Rush, the owner and skipper. The project was part funded by Seafish under the Industry Project Fund. This fact sheet reports on the results and observations from this trial. -

FS27-04.09_Fishing vessel fuel emissions
Responding to climate change by reducing both the amount of waste generated, and the amount of toxic substances released into the environment is a smart choice for the fishing industry. Carbon footprints relate to how much Greenhouse gases are emitted. For the fishing sector emissions are influenced by a number of factors including the abundance of fish (stocks), the steaming distance to fishing grounds, and the fishing technology used. But there are options a skipper can adopt to reduce a vessels carbon footprint by reducing fuel consumption. This fact sheet describes the fuel used by the fishing sector, it outlines the current emissions regulations and how these may affect the fishing industry. It also provides an overview of a fishing vessels ‘carbon footprint’ and how it can be improved. -

A Pilot Pot Fishery for Nephrops Norvegicus off the Northern Ireland coast
The study was managed by officials from DARD, ANIFPO including the owners of the vessels engaged in the study and AFBI who carried out scientific monitoring of the pilot fishery. With the introduction of the Irish Sea cod recovery programme and its associated temporary sea area closures, several Northern Irish fishing vessels were displaced. They were encouraged to find sustainable alternatives to complete their annual fishing plans. Amongst the fishing vessels affected were four small (under 12 metre) vessels, which had traditionally targeted cod using gill-nets. The closure effectively stopped this fishery. As a result the four vessels, like many of their larger colleagues diversified into the Nephrops fishery using trawls. However, with the increasing costs of fuel and other overheads, combined with reductions in the landed price for Nephrops, the owners of the four vessels, together with the ANIFPO, decided to investigate alternative fishing opportunities. Following internal discussion, and with DARD’s Sea Fisheries Division, an application for funding was submitted to allow sea trials in the “open Irish Sea”, to examine the practicalities of using pots/creels to catch Nephrops. While creels were used in Strangford Lough, and other similar Loughs around Scotland, the possibility of using creels in areas traditionally trawled had not been investigated. -

ILO Work in Fishing Convention 188. What it means for the UK fishing industry and those operating in UK waters. July 2019
The International Labour Organization (ILO) Work in Fishing Convention 188 is a global labour standard to ensure fishers have minimum standards and decent conditions of work on board all fishing vessels. It sets responsibilities for owners, skippers and fishers, regardless of their employment status. The Convention establishes minimum requirements for work on board; conditions of service; accommodation and food; occupational safety and health protection; medical care and social security. The UK ratified the Convention in January 2019. This will impact on all aspects of living and working conditions on UK fishing vessels, wherever those vessels are operating. It will also apply to fishing vessels (that are not UK registered vessels) operating in UK waters. The new provisions will be phased in, but many of them applied in the UK from 30 December 2018. This briefing note provides an overview of what is covered by the new legislation and what changes this will bring about. The new legislative requirements have been split into those covering health and safety and those covering working conditions. There is also guidance on where to look for further information. -

This report presents the findings from the first year of a study to provide an assessment of the benefits of fishery accreditation, using the MSC certified North Sea (NS) haddock fishery as a detailed case study to determine current benefits and to track benefits for the next two consecutive years (in subsequent follow-up research). The objective of the project is to identify and assess the benefits of Scottish MSC haddock certification in branded MSC and non-labelled segments of the retail and foodservice supply chains. Furthermore, indirect benefits will be explored throughout the supply chain and with other stakeholders in the seafood industry -

Use of discards in bait
Further to the Defra ‘Fishing for the Markets’ initiative, this study explores whether discards from English vessels not destined for human consumption can be utilised in bait in England. Analysis of current discards from the English fleet and the pot bait needs of those targeting crab and lobster showed that the bait market could potentially utilise all discards in England. Commercial sea trials tested the effectiveness of a range of discards species as bait. These identified that virtually all species currently discarded by English fishing vessels could be used as effective pot bait for crabbers. But this was not the case for lobster catches where the sea trials showed a negative impact on the catch rate compared to traditional bait. The study concludes that the use of discards as pot bait will predominantly depend on the cost as they will be competing on price with a range of existing cost-effective baits already used by the potting sector. -

SR688 The velvet swimming crab (Necora puber) fishery in Northern Ireland: a study of populations and welfare to enhance sustainability
Velvet swimming crabs are traditionally consumed by southern European nations where crab fisheries have collapsed - this has enabled development of the velvet crab fishery in Northern Ireland as a commercially significant sector. There exists, however, virtually no data on which to base the sustainable exploitation of this fishery. This research will pursue studies of populations and individuals of the velvet crab to provide critical information to inform and guide policy in this important fishing industry in Northern Ireland, and will potentially develop local economies and jobs. We will: (1) conduct field surveys of abundance and population structure of velvet crab; (2) assess effects of fishing methods and by-catch on sustainability; (3) examine the welfare of individuals with physiological measures to enhance survivorship and welfare during transportation, thus improving meat yield and quality. -

Alternative Marine Conservation Zones in Irish Sea mud habitat: Assessment of habitat extent and condition at “Queenie corner” and assessment of fishing activity at potential MCZ sites. Public
27 Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in Secretary of State and English waters were designated by the UK government, acting through Defra, in a first tranche in 2013, followed by a second tranche of 23 MCZs designated in 2016. Consultation of a third tranche is planned for early 2017, including potentially a number of sites of particular concern to the Northern Ireland fishing industry (Slieve Na Griddle, South Rigg and Mud Hole). Defra previously identified that these three sites, which were originally suggested through the Irish Sea Conservation Zones project, require further consideration due to their location within important fishing grounds, and that their designation “could have a significant impact on the fishing sector, particularly within Northern Ireland”. Defra has encouraged the fishing industry to develop alternative site proposals for protecting subtidal mud habitats in the Irish Sea region, and that all available options will be then be considered in the third tranche of designations (Defra, 2015). Alternative sites were proposed following stakeholder engagement in a report for Seafish by AFBI in 2015 (AFBI, 2015); this concluded that the “least worst” options in terms of potential fishery displacement, yet representing the key habitat of interest, subtidal mud, were West of Walney in the eastern Irish Sea and a new site, “Queenie Corner”, in the western Irish Sea. West of Walney was included in Tranche 2 of the MCZ designations, and this included a co-location zone with wind farms which had held up its submission in Tranche 1. It passed through consultation and was designated in January 2016. The site proposed as “Queenie Corner” in AFBI (2015) was formally proposed to Defra for consideration in October 2015, with support of both the Anglo-North Irish Fish Producers’ Organisation Ltd. and Northern Ireland Fish Producers’ Organisation Ltd. However, due to the introduction of the Welsh Fishery Zone, the site had to be re-drawn to avoid overlap with this zone, which reduced the original site area proposed. During 2014 and 2015 additional surveys were completed by AFBI aboard the RV Corystes to provide the habitat evidence required for full consideration of Queenie Corner by Defra. Seafish provided funding for processing of samples and work up of these data to evaluate the presence, extent and condition of the habitat at Queenie Corner, and compare this to similar evidence at the remaining potential sites of Slieve Na Griddle, South Rigg and Mud Hole. This work is reported here, along with a comparison of fishing effort between 2006 and 2014 over each of these sites, and also West of Walney, to provide an overview of how these sites compare in terms of potential fisheries displacement should designation occur and management measures require banning of mobile gear fisheries. -

Seafish response to the proposed marine Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in English waters
Seafish does not possess the local data required to provide an accurate response to both the scientific case and the socio-economic impacts for each of the proposed European marine sites (EMS). We have therefore provided a general response that is applicable to all 10 sites because it addresses shortcomings that seem to be common to all or most. As a first and very general observation the means by which the current consultation has been conducted reveals a possible lack of understanding of the structure of the catching sector, the functions of its representative bodies, and the likelihood that individual fishermen will respond to documents of this nature. Our canvassing of individual operatives shows an extremely low level of awareness of the exercise, an even lower level of those who have even looked at the documents and a pretty infinitesimal number who have read, understood and responded. The original conssultation can be viewed at: http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/marine/sacconsultation/default.aspx -
