Scallop Spat Collection Trials 1981/1982.
The objectives of the 1981 and 1982 spat collection trials were to obtain further information on the type and deployment of collectors in order to maximise their efficiency. Peak settlement in 1981 occurred in early July for Pecten and Chlamys, with a maximum average yield of 605 and 649 spat per collector respectively. In 1982, the peak of settlement occurred in late June, possibly before the bulk of the collectors were placed in the sea and the maximum yield for Pecten and Chlamys per collector was 451 and 185 respectively. Initial trials using different collector materials were carried out to establish the most cost effective type of bag and filler. These trials will continue. Fish Portion Sizes - Blue Whiting & Chip Shop Interviews
In the absence of any up to date statistics regarding portion sizes of fish fillets sold in fish and chip shops, the White Fish Authority commissioned a national survey to interview fish friers. 734 fish friers were contacted by telephone during August, 1977, to determine the average portion size of their main selling species. In addition, they were asked questions about skin-on and skin-off fillets, purchases of wet and/or frozen fish, whether they had heard of Blue Whiting and whether they would consider selling it. The specific use of the research was to locate shops selling small portions of frozen, skin-on fish. Following are the results of the research expressed in terms of national finding with various regional distinctions highlighted when significant. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Hall Test Research on Blue Whiting
Three sets of hall tests were held in February/March 1976, using blue whiting caught by the Artic Privateer in April 1975. In each set, 200 housewives were served samples of both crumbed and pan-fried and of grilled fillets and their responses to the appearance, flavour and texture of the cooked fish obtained. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Assessment of Blue Whiting Acceptability in Institutions
These acceptability trials were commenced in September 1975 using blue whiting from the catch off the Artic Privateer which were processed into block fillets in Aberdeen (AIS Report 146). They were continued in 1976 using block fillets processed in Stornoway (AIS Report 171) and extended in 1977 to include single skin-on fillets processed in Stornoway. In each case the blue whiting block fillets were battered and deep fried – the normal method of preparing fish in the hospital or school concerned. Unless specific questions were asked neither the hospital staff nor the school children participating in the trials were informed that the fish species being served to them was blue whiting. The results obtained suggest that provided the fish are suitably size-graded, blue whiting prepared in this way represents an acceptable product to institutional diners who would normally choose fish. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Commercial Development of Marine Fish Farming - Dover Sole
This study has been carried out to provide guidance in the formulation of future marine farming Research and Development programmes. The requirement was to produce forecasts of the likely costs of farming marine whitefish commercially, using the best data available at the end of 1975 season. The information presented in this report must be read in this light and not, until certain further results have been established and the trials scale expanded, be taken as an investment guide. Two species, Dover sole and turbot are considered. Only outline technical data, sufficient for understanding the basis of the study, are given with the full background material being presented in separate reports. (Refs 1 and 2). This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Development of a Breaded Seafood Product - Seafood Platter
This is the second in a series of reports covering product development and marketing work carried out by the White Fish Authority as part of its overall programme for expanding the market for under-utilised shellfish species. The work was carried out under a joint contract by a well known shellfish processing company in order to develop a range of sophisticated and up-market products based on cockles and mussels. A wide range of products was developed, a small number of which were extensively researched and consumer tested, and this report is concerned with the first of these products, a frozen breaded mixture of various shellfish and pieces of white fish called “Seafood Platter”. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

A Study to Forecast the Commercial Costs of Farming Turbot and Dover Sole
The 1975 equivalent report (Technical Report 130) was based on research results obtained from the White Fish Authority’s (WFA) and the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food fish cultivation programmes. At that time, because, of course, industry’s involvement was not at the commercial stage, several of the important costing parameters had to be taken from fresh water trout farming. Predictions, however, were that such schemes were viable. Since 1975 the WFA’s Research and Development Programme has largely been directed to confirming the predictions and to establishing commercially appropriate costs. During the period, commercial participation has become more active, particularly with turbot. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

The Continued Development of a Larval Rearing Technique for Turbot
Eggs of turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, were transported from the White Fish Authority’s Marine Farming Unit, Hunterston and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food Unit, Lowestoft at the eyed ova stage and hatched in tanks at the Authority’s Marine Farming Unit, Ardtoe. The tanks, with constant illumination and temperature control, were stocked with rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis and algae (mainly Phaeodactylum sp) before the eggs were installed. The larvae were fed successively on rotifers, various stages of the brine shrimp, Artomia salina, and mysid shrimps, Leptomysis gracilis. A total of 1,764 metamorphosed fish were produced, the survival of the best batch of eggs being 1.1%. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Squid - A review of their biology and fisheries
LABORATORY LEAFLET NO. 48 - LOWESTOFT Worldwide interest in squid fisheries remained at a low level until shortly after the second world war when the Japanese developed their fishery for Todarodes pacificus into a major industry. In 1960 this produced a peak catch in excess of 690,000 tonnes. Subsequently the Japanese have exploited squid in several other parts of the world and over the last two decades a major fishery has developed in the North-west Atlantic involving distant-water fleets from most of the major fishing nations. Line Ripping Trials with Automated Equipment (Jigging)
Ripping (or Jigging) is the fishing method in which a weighted line with a number of hooks is lowered into a shoal of feeding fish. The hooks are disguised with colouired lures to attract the fish and the line is moved rapidly up and down. This has traditionally been a handline fishery, but new equipment from Scandinavia has now fully automated the process at very reasonable cost. Glazed Seafood Weight Indication Guidance
Frozen seafood or fishery products which are presented for sale to the final consumer or to mass caterers with a protective ice-glaze should only have their ‘net’ weight indicated. This should be the weight of the product itself i.e. product without the glaze. Indications of the size of the individual food products, for example the size of prawns within the package, should also be given net of glaze, referring to only the drained product. Products traded between businesses (other than caterers) are subject to different rules. Businesses should be aware that the products, once they are placed on the market to caterers or the final consumer, will require this information. There are also requirements for the price marking of goods offered for sale to consumers. Price marking must also be based on the net drained weight of the product. -

Understand the EU’s decision-making process. Part 2
The concepts of public participation in decision-making, and consultation with interested and affected stakeholders, have an important place in EU governance. Consultation is a process through which the Commission collects opinions and views from citizens and stakeholders about its policies in line with Treaty obligations. Advisory Councils consist of representatives from fishing and aquaculture organisations, plus interest groups such as environmental and consumer NGOs, covering a number of geographical areas and fields of competence. The new Common Fisheries Policy strengthens the role of the Advisory Councils and Member States and the Commission have a duty to take their views into account. -
Further investigations into selectivity and separator trawls
This report describes the most recent in a series of trials investigating the selectivity performance of separator trawls. The twin warp nets were deployed simultaneously on a twin rig trawler in the Moray Firth over a two week period. Four different cod end mesh sizes were used in a number of combinations. The catch from each of the four cod ends were identified and measured. The catch data were analysed to determine the extent of vertical separation for each species and the size selectivity of each codend. Good separation was found and some useful observations made as to the influence of fish size on separation and cod end position on selectivity. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Towing Power Efficiency
This project has been undertaken with a view to establishing relationships between the different factors which might improve or impair the effectiveness of a fishing vessel in the trawling mode. The intention is to provide a set of factors which can be applied to the basic specifications of a fishing vessel to give an accurate indication of its towing performance. A possible application is seen in the transfer or aggregation of fishing vessel licences and in which the current indicator of towing performance (or vessel capacity) is expressed solely in terms of physical dimensions of the vessel and the installed power of its propulsion engine. No account is taken of the utilisation of power on the vessel. Similarly indices of total fleet ‘capacity’ are maintained on a basis of reference to total displacement or installed propulsion power and thus fail to take account of any factors which might alter the relationship between these parameters and actual performance of the fleet. In either case, a means of accurately modifying the traditional methods of assessing performance of individual vessels should provide an option of more accurately controlling the changes in structure of the fleet. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Mollusc Purification Plant
Viviers (UK) Limited have installed a new purification tank at their premises in Portsmouth to give more flexibility to their existing operation. They contracted Seafish, under their mollusc purification advisory service, to comment on the tanks ability to meet MAFF design criteria, a site visit being made on 5th March. Of G.R.P. construction the tank was found to meet most of the design criteria, the exceptions being a much higher water exchange rate than that normally required and the absence of a water heater. These were not considered to be problems with this particular design of tank. This report describes the purification tank design and operation and concludes that it meets the basic technical requirements and will cleanse bivalve molluscs to the required standard. -

Separating fish from prawns in bottom trawls
The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, commonly called the “prawn”, is widely distributed around the UK and is the main species for a number of important trawl fisheries. The animals are caught by specially designed light bottom trawls with a small mesh, on grounds where the seabed usually consists of fine cohesive mud in which they excavate burrows. But in many Nephrops fisheries because of the small mesh, there can be a significant by-catch of white fish, often of undersized commercial species. This is particularly true in the Irish Sea with whiting and the Bay of Biscay with hake. It would, therefore, make a lot of sense from the point of view of conservation if, when trawling for Nephrops, this catch could be separated from the undersized fish and moreover only those fish of marketable size retained. -

Fact Sheet: Seafish activities in relation to the Landing Obligation. December 2017
Under the revised Common Fisheries Policy a Landing Obligation (LO) is being introduced gradually, between 2015 and 2019 for all commercial fisheries (species under TACs, or under minimum sizes) in European waters. Seafish’s work on the LO is diverse and cuts across a number of work streams. We are providing valuable services to industry and government and our coordination role in communicating about ongoing projects is limiting duplication of work. This paper summarises our recent, current and future activities. These activities have been agreed by Seafish’s three Sector Panels and demonstrate a commitment to help industry meet the challenges of the LO. Key work areas for Seafish are: economic implications; gear selectivity; the Seafish Discard Action Group; briefings and guidance; outreach; a project to assess the impact of the LO on the UK supply chain; sectoral support; and marketing and communications. -

Mussel Stocking Density Trials
During 1987 spatted mussel collector ropes were used as a basis for a suspended cultivation trial to determine the effects of reduced stocking density on the production of marketable size mussels. Excess spat were retubed for ongrowing in Pergolari mesh and marketable yields were compared with those for rope cultivation. Results clearly indicated that reducing stock density and retubing the excess gave a considerable increase in yields of marketable size mussels. Free of flesh shell - further trials
The findings of previous work to define free of flesh shell showed that whilst many shellfish types could be effectively cleaned some species were both hard to clean and difficult to assess their 'free of flesh' status due to high residual test levels of flesh test parameters within shells. This follow on project builds on the previous work, to help find a way forward in developing an alternative testing protocol based upon the use of a leach methodology and to explore options for a combination cleaning process which can produce FOF shell for difficult to clean shell types such as crab. -
Multi-Layer Mussel Purification Tank
This report describes the trials which subsequently took place following the design of the stainless steel multi-layer tank by Bead Engineering, to Seafish specification, and its installation at the premises of Heiploeg Lynn. The trials were conducted by Seafish as part of its 1988/89 MAFF Research Commission, Project NBA 16. A total of eighteen purifications were made with the tank using a single initial mix of artificial seawater to which ten percent make-up was added at each use. Bacteriological analysis showed that mussels purified satisfactorily throughout the trials and there was no detrimental effect on mussel storage life. It became clear during the trials that water temperature needed to be kept between 5° and 10°C to ensure satisfactory purification. This makes it essential to house the tank in a building in order to maintain temperature control. Following the first twelve trials the effect of overloading trays/boxes with mussels was investigated and it was possible to establish a safety margin on the nominal load of 15kg per box. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Initial Trials to Extend the Storage life of Cod and mackerel using Sodium Hypochlorite or Ozone to Treat Ice and Refrigerated Seawater
Despite diminishing fish stocks and the higher prices which can be attained for top quality fish, poor quality fish is still being landed into UK ports. As well as addressing the more traditional handling problems Seafish has identified the use of techniques such as ozonation and chlorination which may enable the improvement of fish quality by reducing the rate of bacterial spoilage. Trials were carried out to determine the effect of sodium hypochlorite and ozone on the quality of cod and mackerel in treated ice or RSW. Holding mackerel in RSW treated with sodium hypochlorite reduced the rate of bacterial spoilage by over 50%; little improvement was seen in the quality of cod. -
The Results of a Water and Effluent Study carried out at A. Darnell Limited in November 1997
In the near future new environmental legislation will add greatly to the cost and difficulty of disposing of waste water. This will present a significant problem to the fish industry. Seafish has commissioned a number of water audits in fish processing companies, looking at water usage and effluent production, with a view to minimising both. -
The Effect of Product/Process Variables on the Textural Quality of Formed Fillets and their Market Acceptability
Previous work has shown the technical feasibility of producing formed portions of a variety of accurately controlled sizes and shapes from under-utilised or undervalued white fish species. The process and product were shown to have distinct production and marketing advantages, the tight control of portion weight being particularly advantageous to the catering trade, but there was adverse comment from the trade on the ‘rubbery’ texture of the portions produced. This project was to determine the cause of and to rectify the problem of texture, and to investigate the acceptability to the consumer of portions formed from low cost raw material of various white fish species. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

A Review of Water Disinfection Technology to Determine Suitable Equipment for Use Onboard Boat for the Disinfection of Seawater
Supplies of clean water are essential for the industry to maintain high standards of hygiene and quality. This report is concerned with a review of water disinfection technology, carried out to identify equipment suitable for use at sea for seawater disinfection. The review considers the equipment required, the safety and the estimated costs associated with each treatment. Ionization, chlorination, UV and ozone were identified as being potentially suitable and warranting further investigation. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. An investigation of the potential of the Baader 34 and 182 machines for filleting small gadoids
Large quantities of small haddock and whiting are landed in the UK. There is no efficient filleting machinery currently available for these fish, and the cost of processing them by hand is disproportionately high. Consequently their market value is low, and often they are withdrawn from sale when landings are heavy. The SFIA has been contracted by MAFF to carry out a commercial evaluation of the Baader 34 herring filleting machine, modified for blue whiting, for filleting these fish. The SFIA also undertook to investigate the new Baader 182, a filleting machine being developed for small gadoids from the now discontinued prototype Baader 121 blue whiting filleting machine. Blue whiting is a gadoid and thus is physically more similar to haddock and whiting than herring. Review of Fishing Port Development and Proposals
This report is a companion document to Report 268 which is issued as Part I. Here the processing industry and its geographical location is analysed in relation to supplies including imports. The picture emerges that no one region of the UK is wholly self reliant in supplies and processing capacity. The concept of a resource centre is proposed. It concludes that Humberside is the dominant resource centre in the UK because of imports, overland supplies and processing capacity. This position is unlikely to change in the near future. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
