Brixham Fish Market Study
For a number of years Torbay Council and its partners have been working to put in place an effective plan for the regeneration of the town of Brixham, including the provision of fisheries infrastructures that would ensure the long-term viability of the local fleet and fish-related businesses. Previous studies identified major problems in the port relating to lack of space, poor road access, insufficient parking and inadequate and unhygienic facilities for the landing and sale of fish, its processing and onward distribution. As a first stop to the regeneration of the town, Torbay Development Agency (TDA) is planning a new fish market and landing quay to be built on reclaimed land and for the existing fish market to be upgraded to provide modern hygienic facilities that will accommodate fish processing and storage. -
Instrumented Trials on 'Destiny'
A Seafish trials team carried out an instrumented sea trial in December 1989 to investigate the causes of excessive exhaust temperature on the main propulsion engine. A report on these trials was produced as CR7. It was confirmed that the engine was not subject to overload in any of its fishing or steaming modes. The worst situations involved seining activitiers in which the engine was required to provide power to the jhydraulic seine winch and rope reels while running at low speeds (500 to 700 engine revs/min) in order to limit forward thrust from the propeller. -

FS3-02.08-Fillet discolouration
Whitefish flesh naturally changes colour with age and depending on how it has been handled after capture. Initially, whitefish species such as cod and haddock have a blue, translucent colouration, which changes to white after a couple of days. After this the flesh can become yellow and then brown but it is generally considered inedible before it changes into these colours. However there are also other reasons as to why fish flesh can be classed as discoloured. This factsheet provides a very basic summary about the reasons for colour changes in whitefish. -

Estuary Profile. Menai Strait. N. Wales
The Menai Strait is the channel separating Anglesey from mainland North Wales. It is subjected to strong tidal streams from both ends which bring both advantages are the constant replenishment of nutrient rich constant-salinity sea water and the disadvantages are the tidal scour, especially at the North East end. Elsewhere there are sheltered areas suitable for shellfish growing. There is a little industrial waste discharged into the Strait and there are plans to improve the raw sewage treatment. -

Trials to determine the nitrogen factor of both UK and Imported fillet and minced cod blocks
A code of Practice on the declaration and labelling of fish content in fishery products was recently drawn up by participants from Industry and Enforcement Agencies. Enforcement officers will use this Code of Practice wherever there is a need to consider the correct declaration of fish content. The Code currently contains interim nitrogen factors for fish ingredient (used to determine fish content) which have been obtained by reducing the available data on nitrogen content of fish straight from the sea by amounts thought to accord with the effect of good manufacturing practice (GMP). There is a need to carry out trials to determine the actual nitrogen content of GMP products to replace these interim values. This report is concerned with trials carried out between December 2001 and September 2003 to determine the nitrogen factor of fish ingredient of double frozen fillet and mince blocks produced under GMP in the UK. Sampling took into account both seasionality and raw-material capture area. In addition, samples were taken at key stages to determine the effect of processing. Trials were also carried out to determine the nitrogen factor of the equivalent single and double frozen blocks imported into the UK from five different countries. -

Exploratory Fishing Trials for Buccinum undatum around the Island of Barra and South Uist in the Western Isles
This report presents the results of exploratory fishing trips undertaken between Sept 1996 and June 1997 to assess catch rates and composition of whelks (Buccinum undatum and Neptuna antiqua)in locations around the Western Isles. Buccinum was captured routinely at all loctions indicating a widespread occurrence throughout the two survey areas, whereas Neptuna was caught predominantly offshore, in deep water. However, the catch per effort was extremely low, and the areas investigated cannot be regarded as being able to support whelk fisheries. The predominance of animals with large and heavily fouled shells suggests the existence of an ageing population which, probably, would be unable to withstand sustained fishing effort. Furthermore, fishing opportunities would be severely restricted by potential conflict with other fisheries, in terms of seasonal access to grounds. -

Traceability and consumer information under EU fisheries control measures and fish marketing requirements Version 4
European fisheries control measures apply minimum labelling and information requirements throughout the supply chain for certain fisheries and aquaculture products whilst under marketing requirements the consumer and mass caterers must be provided with prescribed catch information. Mass caterers include businesses such as restaurants and takeaways in which food is prepared for consumption by the consumer. The requirements do not apply to all fishery products and some exempted from fisheries control are not exempt under marketing. Under Parts I and II this document provides guidance on which products the traceability and consumer information apply to and what information is required within the supply chain and ultimately for consumers and mass caterers. This document consolidates and updates previous guides on information and traceability requirements in the fisheries control regulation (EC) 1224/2009 and the common organisation of the markets regulation (EU) 1379/2013 into a single guide. -

Turbot Hatchery Production 1981
During 1981 a total of 988,900 day one (dl) turbot larvae commenced rearing at the Hatchery at the Marine Farming Unit, Ardtoe. These comprised of 544,600 larvae from WFA spawning stocks at Ardtoe and Hunterston and 434,400 larvae originating at Scottish Sea Farms Hatchery at South Shian. In addition, a batch of 19,000 turbot/brill hybrid larvae was received from MAFF Lowestoft. Larval rearing methods closely followed those of 1980. The eggs produced at Ardtoe in 1981 (6.5% hatching rate) were of poorer quality than those of 1980 (16% hatching rate). This almost certainly reflected mortalities among proven female spawners between the two seasons. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish -
Alternative Stimulation in Fisheries
The objective of this concerted action is to review current knowledge of fish behaviour and the stimuli to which they react. One aim of the review is to reveal where improvements might be made to current practice in fisheries. Question might be: is there an alternative to heavy ground gears that are thought to damage the sea bed perhaps using sound pulses, electric fields, laser beams or water jets? Why do not all fish small enough pass out through grids and square mesh windows built into codend extensions? It is widely recognized that there is a fund of knowledge about fish behaviour as well as the properties of physical and natural stimuli that is not made use of in applied fishing gear technology. -

Quality Audit of the Port of Whitby
This report presents the findings of a Quality Audit of the fishing port of Whitby that examined the quality of raw material supplies to the port, standards of physical infrastructure, operating practices and management controls. The quality of fish supplied to the market is generally good but let down by day-boats not using ice and by poor standards of gutting by some boats. The fish market is refrigeerated and generally maintained to a high standard but suffers from inadequate space for handling and transport ex-market that is compounded by public right of access. The standard of hygiene on the market is poor despite the introduction of a code of practice with smoking, drinking, eating and walking on fish boxes commonplace. Wash-down of the market floor is adequate but improvements could be made to cleaning of the wall, market equipment and oxes. Recommendation is made for establishing standards, procedures and controls, including documented records of monitoring and a policy for enforcement and for training. -

Efficient Use of Energy in Fish Harvesting_Interim Meeting
The principal rationale to hold a meeting related to the premise that fish harvesting utilises more energy to produce a kilgramme of product than any other in the food producing industry. The fishing industry should, therefore find ways of optimising its energy consumption. Responsible approaches to harvesting operations must be found that yield the desired quantity and composition of fish while at the same time being fuel efficient. This concept coincides with the need to optimise energy consumption in the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible fishing which is also a concept being developed by the Canadian Government. The objective of the meeting was to bring together those in the inernational community who are working on research, development and commercial projects in responsible fishing operations to avoid duplication of effort. -

Trials with Monofilament Longline gear on MFV Gannet in Whitby
A 39ft Whitby vessel, MFV Gannet was chartered for 15 fishing days between 14 January and 12 February 1985. The vessel was fitted with equipment for the purpose of monofilament longlining. The vessel worked the system for 3 weeks of trials. Catch rates were at times well up to those of traditional longliners working alongside, but on average they were lower reflecting a number of factors. The murkiness of the water, characteristic of the winter months, appeared to obscure the advantages of monofilament lines. The time taken to bait the monolines and the crew learning time are problems still to be resolved. -

Opportunities for Composite Fillet Portions of Blue Whiting in Inst. Catering.
A market research study carried out on behalf of the White Fish Authority (WFA) in may 1979 (Ref) to determine the acceptability of sample composite fillet portions of blue whiting in fried fish outlets in the north west of England, indicated that although the portions were well received, there was unlikely to be a demand for the product in the frying trade in current circumstances. The composite fillet concept appeared to be perfectly acceptable to the friers interviewed, but potential usage in the trade would be governed by factors such as attitudes towards frozen fish and the supremacy of cod as the main selling species. It was therefore decided to conduct a similar exercise in the non commercial sector of the catering market. Composite fillet portions of blue whiting, manufactured on a trial basis at Torry Research Station as before, were demonstrated at personal interviews with caterers in hospitals, schools and industrial canteens. The research, carried out in the early summer of 1980, indicated that there could well be potential for composite fillet portions of white fish in institutional catering. Study of the Southern Section of the English East Coast Fishing Industry
A comprehensive overview of the fishery and associated industry is included. The current fish stock situation in the North Sea in particular as it affects the cod quota allocation emerges as a vitally important local issue to the majority of inshore fishers. The Wash fishery is heavily dependant upon shellfish resources and there are two areas of concern there viz. the impact of impending EC fish hygiene regulations and the serious decline of molluscan shellfish stocks in 1989. Lowestoft's offshore fishery dependent mainly on the plaice is buoyant and indeed the frustration there is that of constraint investment owing to the overall UK fleet's perceived over production. There are problems with regard to repayment of investment with the new fish market. -

Observations and Trials of Fish Handling on Small Vessels - Stage 2 (incomplete)
This project acknowledges the need for improvement in the quality of fish from inshore vessels, the majority of which are small and operate as day trip boats. The large fleet of inshore vessels under 16.5m lands an estimated value of fish of at least £100 million per annum. However, the quality of a proportion of this catch is often far from what it could be due to lack of facilities and temperature control. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Cuttlefish Quality and Handling Trials
In conjunction with the Marine Technology department's cuttlefish capture trials, the Fish Technology department conducted trials to investigate factors affecting cuttlefish quality. The trials studied the effects of both icing delay and gutting delay upon cuttlefish quality. Although the extent of the trials was limited they showed that cuttlefish spoil rapidly if not chilled and that even a short delay of 6 hours between bringing them aboard and icing has a significant effect on quality. The gutting delay trials have shown that the gut membrane of the cuttlefish is very strong, and for cuttlefish stored from capture at chill temperatures, it takes approximately 9-10 days before this membrane weakens, ruptures and effects the cuttlefish's quality. Some D.A. Massonage to cuttlefish was noted, caused by certain capture methods used, especially pots. See also Seafish Report SR467. Mussel Purification Laboratory Scale Trials of Deep Stack Purification Combining Re-use of Artificial Seawater and Direct Aeration
To make large scale mussel purification more cost effective and to improve its control, Seafish has developed a modular, deep stacking purification tank in which artificial seawater is re-used many times. Having demonstrated in principle that the system would work, as described in TR's 312 and 339, Seafish has now conducted trials with a deep stacking purification tank using direct aearation instead of water circulation to further decrease the costs of the system. A direct aearation system is cheaper as it does not need expensive pumping equipment. -

Trials to Compare the Thermal Performance of a New Design of CRT Non-reusable Double Walled Fibreboard Fish Box with Expanded Polystyrene and Single Walled Fibreboard Boxes
Trials were carried out to compare the thermal properties of expanded polystyrene (EPS), single walled fibreboard (SWF) and double walled fibreboard (DWF) boxes. The boxes were tested in an environmental chamber and fish fillet temperature in each box was recorded for two time-temperature profiles. The first profile represented an interrupted chilled chain distribution over 66 hours, such as by airfreight and the second profile represented a controlled chilled distribution of 72 hours such as by road transport. Fillets in each box were chilled using a single frozen gel-ice pack placed on top of the fillets, or using ice. The EPS box was most effective at maintaining low fillet temperature for both temperature profiles and cooling methods. The DWF box had similar but slightly better insulative properties than the SWF box. Ice chilling of fillets was more effective than a single gel-ice pack at maintaining low fillet temperatures for both temperature profiles. At the end of the trials using ice, the amount of melt water produced exceeded the capacity of the absorbent pad used. The ratio of ice used and/or absorbent pad capacity needs careful consideration to prevent fillets from soaking in melt water in non-draining boxes. Where fish is distributed in an uncontrolled chilled distribution chain, boxes with greater insulative properties, such as EPS would be advisable in order to maintain low product temperatures. Where fish is distributed in a strictly controlled distribution chain, it would be beneficial to use boxes with less insulation, to allow chill temperatures to influence product temperatures -

The Use of Square Mesh Selector Panels as a Means of Improving Selectivity of Demersal Towed Fishing Gear
Three series of trials with square mesh windows are described, all of which took place in the first half of 1990 off the NE Scotland, Orkney and Hebrides. The trials were a combination of comparative hauls and film using the DAFS-RCTV. The first on 'CLUPEA' showed clearly the benefits of the square mesh in releasing undersized fish and gave confidence to proceed to a commercial trial on the seiner 'KESTREL'. Finally more RCTV film and further refinements were made on a trial on the 'ST. KILDA'. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. The Development of a Suitable Synthetic Replacement for the Traditional Cotton Drift Nets as Utilised in the Cornish Pilchard Fishery
This report was the second in a series of 3 reports on drift netting for pilchards. Drift netting for pilchards is an environmentally friendly fishing method that is highly energy efficient. The fishery had ceased to be viable in the 1950s due to economic factors. If redeveloped, the fishery could bring considerable benefits though both employment and tourism. The report concluded that the old style cotton nets could indeed be replaced with a synthetic equivalent, and that the correct stiffness of the twine was identified as being very important in allowing pilchard removal without damage. -

A Further Study of Amendment to the UK Fishing Vessel Licensing System: A Capacity Exchange System
Following the technical assessment of three proposed amendments to the UK fishing vessel licensing system, undertaken by Seafish at the request of MAFF and reported in TR 344, a further scheme for control of fleet capacity through restrictive licensing has been studied. The three amendments originally proposed by the Fisheries departments did not reduce capacity to the MAGP targets. The purpose of the further scheme was to see if a measure could be introduced to reduce capacity still more at the time an owner changes from one vessel to another. This scheme is based on the premise that, in order to introduce a new vessel into the fleet, licences of greater vessel capacity must be surrendered. Capacity is measured in terms of a Vessel Capacity Unit (VCU) formulation (VCU = L*B+0.45Kw), and derogation would be given for the direct replacement of a lost vessel. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Initial Trials to Increase Acoustic Detectability of Drift Nets used in the Albacore Tuna Fishery
The drift net fishery for Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) has been criticised for its alleged by-catch of small cetaceans which include dolphins. If it is possible to make a tuna drift net acoustically very detectable to dolphins then their risk of entanglement in the net is likely to be reduced. At the request of UK fishermen's organisations, Seafish and Loughborough University conducted a joint sea trial in Cornwall to examine some of the practicalities of increasing the acoustic detectability of a tuna drift net. The work concluded that it was possible to achieve an increased acoustic detectability by means of passive reflectors attached to the net, but this was at the expense of an efficient deployment of the nets and was unacceptable to fishermen. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Safety Engineering and Equipment for Fishing Vessels under 20m - Results of Trials on Two Vessels 'Madalia' and 'Silverline'
Safety within the Fishing Industry is often a subject of debate and Seafish have addressed themselves to positively improve safety by both training and, as reported here, by demonstration on ‘Example Vessels’. The concept of ‘Example Vessels’ is to take existing vessels and then to work with the crews and owners to improve the level of safety and safety awareness. Two vessels were selected, the ‘Silver Line’ and the ‘Madalia’, both being inshore trawlers based at Bridlington. Following initial sea trips on the vessel various ideas have been implemented. Some are straight forward emergency measures, such as lifelines and a rescue net. Other ideas improve the layout of working conditions on the vessel. Novel designs have been evolved, such as a slip block to make the ‘blocking up’ operation safe on side trawlers and a four section fish washer was designed by the Skipper of the Silver Line. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Preliminary report on dover sole rearing at the hatchery of the WFA site at Hunterston (Jan 74-Feb 75)
This preliminary document reports the progress and problems of commissioning the new Dover sole hatchery, and running it for the first season. Despite delays outwith the Authority’s control nearly half the intended number of eggs was hatched. Survival to metamorphosis was considered to be normal (about 50%) but the weaning diets tried subsequently were not accepted and only 5% of the intended number of weaned fish was produced. Several shortcomings in the detail design and operation of the hatchery have been identified. Although the results of the first season are disappointing, six recommendations are made which, it is thought, should improve the chances of success in 1975. This report has been produced from a scanned original produced in February 1975 and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Trials using a square mesh panel as a means of improving selectivity in demersal pair trawls
This report covers the latest in a continuing series of sea trials examining different methods of fish capture in an attempt to improve and standardise the design and position of square mesh panels or windows within the trawl to reduce the level of discards whilst retaining acceptable proportions of marketable fish. On these trials a panel was tested in a demeral pair trawl. 'The practice of pair trawling is seen by many as most destructive in view of the high levels of discards often taken by this method of fishing. The objective of the trials was to determine if the use of a square mesh panel would reduce the discard problem. -

UK Fleet Restructuring Model - Mathematical Aspects
Whilst this report deals exclusively with technical aspects of the current SFIA approach to mathematical modelling of the UK Fishing Fleet, it is important to be aware of some background and justification. Early attempts at fleet modelling by the White Fish Authority led to the formation of the Interdepartmental Fisheries Modelling Group, with members from WFA. MAFF and DAFS. Their objectives were to predict the ‘best’ UK fleet composition required to take allowable catches foreseen under various scenarios of EEC policy and fishery resource conservation. This was first tackled using a linear programming (LP) model designed to allocate the fleet in some optimal way, such as to maximise overall profit whilst satisfying strict physical constraints (species quotas, vessel number, etc). Although LP solutions are often acceptable, the method has its drawbacks in applications such as this one. It invariably produces violent changes in fleet allocation in pursuit of some marginal benefit; it is extremely selective in deciding which parts of the fleet to use, ignoring the rest altogether; finally, it always gives solutions on the very limits of what is feasible. Nevertheless, the LP approach did bring benefits, such as amalgamating detailed data from England, Wales and Scotland. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Improving the post harvest care of small shrimp
Initial investigations have shown that it is possible for shrimp cooked at sea to meet the temperature requirements of both the Food Hygiene (Amendment) Regulations for cooked products and E.C. Fishery Products Directive, which willcome into force in January 1993. This is by the use of direct and indirect icing and insulated fish boxes to hold the cooked shrimp, on board vessel. Icing the cooked shrimp at sea also significantly extends the subsequent storage life of the product. It has also been shown possible to hold uncooked brown shrimp in ice onboard and then transfer the cooking operation ashore and produce a satisfactory product. However, during these initial trials this practice was not found to be satisfactory with pink shrimp. -
Mussel Spat Collection and Cultivation Trials in Wales using Bouchots 1987-89
This report describes an investigation into the viability of using the French bouchot pole and Italian pergolai net stocking method for cultivating mussels in South Wales. A modified trial was established in North Wales to accommodate reduced tidal ?. Seed was collected from Morecambe Bay and Caemarfon and monitored over a two year growing period. A computer program was developed to compare growth performance at each site. After a T. Wrayo year growing cycle the mussels averaged 47 mm; 38% meat yield and trade opinion indicated a minimum price of 450/tonne. Costings suggest that for an investment of 20,000 a return of 45,000 per annum is projected. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

A Profile of the South Coast Fisheries - Lyme Regis to Selsey Bill
The fishing sector of the Southern Sea Fisheries District, of Lyme Regis to Selsey BIll, is typified by small-boat (below 12m) operators who collectively lack organisation and representation. It is estimated from anecdotal evidence (see p.2) that in the order of 350 fishing boats operate full time from numerous bases seriously lacking in infrastructure support. Most boats are owner operated, with the only fleet operation being that of Johnson’s Sea Enterprises of Portsmouth who operate four large beam trawlers. In excess of 300 other craft, all less than 12m operate on a part time or casual basis. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Selectivity Trials using Square Mesh Panels in a Scottish Seine
This report is part of a continuing series of sea trials examining different methods of fish capture in an attempt to improve and standardise the design and position of square mesh panels or windows within the trawl to reduce the levels of discards whilst retaining acceptable proportions of marketable fish. On these trials double panels were tested in a Scottish seine net in order to decide on the preferred position for further trials. -
An Investigation into the Conditions Required for the successful Shucking of Wash Mussels
Wash mussels taken from intertidal beds have exhibited problems during the shucking process to obtain good quality meats. The problem is identified as relting to rapid heat transfer to loosen the meats and the thinner shelled mussels from sub-littoral zones are likely to be more suitable for processing. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Double Rig & Separator Trawl Trials held in Firth of Forth
The principle of separating the catch within a trawl has been studied for some time by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland (DAFS) and by the Sea Fish Industry authority (SFIA). It is particularly valuable as a means of separating demersal fish from prawns Nephrops Norvegicus and sea bed debris since the latter two tend to damage the former. The SFIA see value in such a trawl both to improve the quality fo the catch and to make for easier work in the sorting of the catch on deck. -

Regional Study - The Fishing Industry in North East England
A review of the fishery and trends since 1986 includes records of landings with values at the main landing places. There is discussion of the changing fortunes of the producer in terms of income during this period with reference to the main white fish species and Nephrops in particular. The problems associated with the business at the main port of North Shields are discussed as is the related tendency of some vessels to land fish at non traditional ports such as Blyth. Positive indications on the white fish scene are reported from Whitby and Hartlepool and in general lobster landings are holding up well though crab landings are down. In parallel with decreasing landings of whitefish, Nephrop landings and effort are up. The fleet is listed and facilities reported on for all landings. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Norfish: Nordic Fish Supplies in the Context of International Trade
The 1990s are a period of massive changes in fish supplies especially into the European Community. The Community as a whole is the largest single importing block in the World but there is keen international competition to secure supplies in the future. A major source of supply for EC and the UK in particular are the Nordic countries with whom traditional links have been long in place. The report explores these in the context of the changing situation. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Cockle Dredging/Improve Performance Using a Solids Pump
This report describes the development of an improved cockle dredging system for the small (about 12 metres) vessels in the UK fleet carried out under MAFF R&D Commission 1988/89, Project Code IAG16. The major change was to use a solids handling pump for pumping water and cockles from the dredge head as opposed to the former method of a water jet pump incorporated within the dredge, which was the principle of the WFA cockle dredge developed in the 1960’s. Four different solids pumps were shore tested and three found to give satisfactory performance running at a restricted speed. The dredge head design was altered to resemble a smaller version of the standard Dutch suction dredge which has incorporated the solids pump principle for some years. The Dutch dredgers, however, are much larger than those in the UK and for this reason it was not possible to transfer the technology from one fishery to the other. Two separate shipboard installations were completed at Kings Lynn and subsequent trials in the Wash were most successful. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Scallop Predation by Crabs, in Relation to the Development of On-Bottom Cultivation
The feeding success of four species of crabs (Crustacea : Brachyura) which are potential predators of the scallop Pecten maximum (L) was studied under laboratory conditions. Liocarcinus depurator was the only species not to prey on scallops of 4 and 5 cm shell height, whereas Liocarcinus puber. Carcinus maenas and Cancer pagurus showed the greatest potential to prey on scallops and further experiments were carried out with this species using a wide size range of bivalve. Presented with scallops within the range 3-9 cm shell height resulted in the following trends : as prey size increased, the proportion of crabs feeding decreased, male and female crabs showed similar predatory behaviour, and marine fouling on scallop shells had no significant effect on crab feeding. These findings are discussed in relation to the potential for bottom culture of P. maximus. The Effect of Soak Time on the Quality of Cod in Set Nets
The quality of cod resulting from net immersion periods (soak times) of between 3 and 48 hours was investigated. The trials were carried out on a 9 m boat along the Yorkshire coast during July and September 1991. The fish which were alive when brought on board were in excellent condition. After 9 hours soak the freshness of the cod progressively reduced as the physical damage increased. Over half the cod from the 48 hour soak time were spoiled beyond marketability. Recommendations to help assure quality are made. -

Squid Jigging Trials Aboard R.V. Squilla
The jigging trials carried out aboard ARCTIC HUNTER during September 1976 demonstrated that on some occasions at night, loliginid squid could be attracted by artificial lights and caught using Japanese automatic jigging machines. However the low catch rates achieved and the operational experience obtrained suggested that this method of fishing might find only a limited application in the UK. It was felt that the commercial viability of jigging would depend upon suitable operating conditions and the location of sufficiently large stocks of squid. It was concluded that jigging was an unsuitable method of fishing in exposed offshore locations because of the operational difficulties associated with rough seas. -
Estuary Profile. Teign Estuary - Devon
The Teign Estuary, which is situated on the south Devon coast, is long and narrow and opens into the English Channel at Teignmouth. Investigation on 'Maranatha II' (UL33)
The vessel was delivered in 1989 and, since that time, has suffered a number of partial failures of the propulsion engine, a Caterpillar 3508, rated at 765hp at 1440 revs/min. The failures have taken the form of premature failure of inlet and exhaust valves. At or about the time of failure, excessive lub oil consumption has been noted. -
Mussel Purification Commercial Scale Trials
This report describes a series of trials conducted at Monteum Ltd., Shoreham using a modified crustacean holding tank, Mussels were obtained from the Wash and purified using the existing criteria advised by MAFF with the exception that as the trials progressed the number of mussel layers was increased to the maximum of six that the depth of tank allowed. In addition further trials were conducted with increased mussel density in the tank, the use of interleaf boards between layers and purifying mussels in bags. Water temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen were monitored and samples of tank water and mussels, both pre and post purification, were analysed for the bacterium E.coli and Faecal Streptococci. The trial ran from February to April 1987, when trials were curtailed due to the onset of the mussel spawning season, and were concluded during October to November 1987. Regional Study - South West Scotland
The fisheries of South West Scotland are encompassed by the Ayr and Campbeltown statistical districts. Geographically they cover the Scottish Solway coast, the Firth of Clyde and Kintyre and the Inner Hebrides as far North as Colonsay. The Solway is dominated by the Queen scallop fishery centred on Kirkcudbright. The Clyde’s centres are Ayr, Campbeltown and Tarbert with a mix of white fish, shellfish and herring. The white fish include valuable hake but the herring fishery is tiny compared with a few years ago mainly due to a scarcity of the typical large fish much sought after by kipperers. Nephrops dominate the shellfish trade contributing some 30% of the Ayr district total value landed. Campbeltown district including the Inner Hebrides is dominated by shellfish landings in terms of total value. These contribute about 90% of the total of which 50% is from Nephrops. Though much of the shellfish is trucked out of the region, there are Nephrop processors in Campbeltown, Ayr and Scotland’s central belt. White fish is processed in Campbeltown and Ayr and Queen scallops at Campbeltown, Kirkcudbright and Newton Stewart. There are major concerns at the time of writing over disappointing levels of Queen scallop landings. The conflicting interests of trawlers and exercising submarines were highlighted by the tragic incident involving the Carradale vessel ‘ANTARES’. This issue is still of major concern in the area despite much effort towards a resolution. Initial Trials to Investigate the Effectiveness of Sieving and Centrifugal Solids/Liquid Separation for Treating Pelagic Process Effluent
For obvious reasons, many fish processors are sited in coastal areas. These businesses currently pay relatively low effluent treatment charges as the effluent is often discharged into the sea without further treatment. The Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive has to be implemented by the end of the year 2000 and will demand tighter control of the quality of both urban and industrial effluent discharged into controlled waters. It is certain that some form of effluent treatment will be required. the level of treatment will depend on the volume and strength of the effluent and the sensitivity of the receiving water. -

Summary Report on the Problems Faced by the Inshore Shrimp Industry in Complying with European Food Hygiene Legislation
Inshore shrimping is a small, traditional industry now largely dependant on a Dutch export market for brown shrimp but with some local trade in brown and pink shrimp remaining. Uniquely the industry produces a cooked at sea product and it does this in rudimentary conditions often on small, old and poorly equipped vessels. Despite this the industry does not have a history of damaging public health. With increasing concern over food safety, particularly for pre-cooked foods, new hygiene legislation of European origin requires the upgrading of the majority of this industry, although those involved exclusively in small-scale trade within the UK direct to retailers or final consumers or only supplying raw material for further cooking are specifically exempted. Physical upgrading of equipment, rapid chilling after cooking and the use of clean water are required and a microbiological specification for the cooked product must be met. Seafish has been investigating the problems faced by the industry in meeting these requirements, together with possible upgrading solutions. This work had been levy funded. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Commercial Fishing Trials of a Twin Rig Trawling System Using a Two Warp Arrangement - 'Cygnus Star'
This report describes the follow-up work resulting from initial gear handling trials of a twin-trawl system using a two-warp arrangement. The system was evaluated in a situation as near to a normal commercial fishing exercise as was possible. The exercise took place in the Nephrops fishery on the North West coast of Scotland using the MFV ‘Cygnus Star’ which spends most of its fishing time involved in this fishery. Apart from evaluating the handling of the two-warp system itself, the opportunity was taken to examine the performance of two nets rigged with rockhopper ground gears for use on hard ground. As far as we were aware, the twin-rig system has not previously been tried using rockhopper gear. The main aim of the exercise was to assess the commercial viability of operating such a system. The work carried out in this project was funded by MAFF as part of their 1987/88 Commission of Fisheries Research Projects, Code IAE16. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. A Summary Report of the Development and Commercial Trials of Indirect Ice Chilled display Cabinets for keeping ooked products below 5 degrees centigrade
The law currently demands that cooked, smoked and cured products are kept at or below 5oC. In practice keeping these products between 0oC and 5oC is a difficult task. The nature of these products makes them unsuitable for direct icing and mechanical refrigeration will often cause freezing or drying. The majority of retailers struggle to keep products within the legal requirements with existing equipment and practices. There is a need for improved but simple, chill display equipment, especially for use in mobile vans where facilities are often limited. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Improved Selectivity in Towed Gears - Sea Trials to Evaluate Selectivity of Separator Trawls used to catch Mised White Fish Species
The trials described were designed to evaluate the effectiveness and investigate the selectivity aspects of a separator trawl designed to separate cod and fleetfish from other demersal roundfish species. Using a twinning arrangement, two identifcal separator trawls were towed side by side. One net rigged with small mesh codends provided selectivity data when randomly compared against two test codends (100m & 140m). This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Evaluation of Mesh Measurement Methodologies for Fisheries Inspection and Research (MESH) FAIR-CT96-1452_TASK 2
In task two of the project each partner had to identify and describe problems with respect to mesh measurement procedures for scientific applications. A series of hearings was set up involving fisherment, net suppliers and the Inspectorate from all areas of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Any problems with the measurement of mesh sizes in these sectors were discussed and noted. The procedures for ensuring adequate coverage of all sectors and areas are described. The points raised at each meeting are given in detail in Appendices I and II and condensed into points of commonality in the results section. A discussion of relevant points and conclusions is included. -
Fishing Gear Handling Trials of a Twin Rig Trawling System using a 2 Warp Arrangement
There has been considerable increase in the number of European fishermen adopting multi-rig trawling techniques over the past few years. Danish and Norwegian fishermen in particular have adopted twin-trawl systems, using a three warp arrangement to exploit Nephrops, shrimp and white fish fisheries. The three warp system requires the vessel to be equipped with a three barrel winch arrangement. A specification not normally found on standard trawl winches. Seafish decided to evaluate a twin-rig trawling system utilising a two warp arrangement that could be adopted by most fishing vessels equipped for normal bottom trawling operations. A rig was designed and made up and fitted aboard a 12m stern trawler fishing for Nephrops from the North East coast port of North Shields. The trials described in this report present an evaluation of the twin trawl system with regard to the handling of the rig. The trawls used in these trials were two identical nets designed by Seafish. The nets are the same ones as were used in previous trials to evaluate a double-rig system using the trhree warp arrangement. (1297 - Double Rig and Separator Trawl trials held in the Firth of Forth. A study of the Sales/Marketing of Demersal Landings at UK Ports and the potential of Electronic Marketing Systems
This report examines existing practices and problems with the port sale and marketing of fresh demeral species in the UK and the need to make producers more responsive to market requirements. It examines UK industry structures, sales methods and the efficiency of the sales systems to reward good marketing practice (quality, supply, forward information, traceability etc). It compares them with systems in use elsewhere in Europe. The major constraints to the introduction of new systems are identified as opposition from vested commercial interests and problems in establishing the conditions necessary for their success, particularly, grading and weighing. -
Comparison of results in Turbot R & D to November 1978, with previous performance forecasts 1975 & 1977.
Early White Fish Authority experience of farming marine flatfish in sea cages was gained with plaice (1969 – 1973). From 1971 attention was increasingly turned to turbot, a species considered to be more attractive to farm commercially (Refs 1-3) and a number of small scale growth trials were performed with wild origin stock in order to obtain basic growth and husbandry data. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Factors influencing the choice of any coastal marine fish cultivation site and recommended survey programme
Site evaluation is complex and lengthy and following an initial paper survey to reject those evidently untenable a detailed on-the-ground assessment is required. Milford Haven Waterway Area - Development of the Fishing Industry
This report includes an overview of the existing fishing industry within the Milford Haven Waterway and that within adjacent areas where the industry is linked to that of the Waterway. The recent improvement in trading conditions has resulted in the opening up of development prospects. Allied to this additional vessels have recently been purchased by local owners. Clearly the industry cannot be expected to find the substantial investment required for the immediate renewal of vessels and shore facilities. What is equally clear is that the fishing industry must diversify its operations in order to accumulate development capital if it is to survive in the longer term. Development proposals at both Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock do however offer the possibility of the provision of an up-to-date shore base for fishing operations. These are discussed and as far as is possible costed. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Study of the Proposed Amendment to the UK Fishing Vessel Licensing System
The pressure stock licensing scheme was introduced in 1984 primarily to assist quota management and to exercise restraint on the growth of the UK fleet. The current scheme was based on wide length band groupings of 10m to 40ft, 40 to 80ft, and over 80ft registered length. This system is flawed in that vessel and engine sizes tend to increase towards the maximum possible in each length band. Thus there exists a practice of building ‘rule-beaters’, vessels at the upper end of a length band with excess power and tonnage, and capability equivalent to much larger vessels. Seafish (IDU) have, at the request of MAFF, undertaken a study of the possible impact of the amendments to the UK fishing vessel licensing scheme proposed in the consultative paper issued by Fisheries Departments to interested parties in July 1988 – ‘Proposals for Amendments to the UK Licensing System for Fishing Vessels’. It should be noted that the Seafish Board have already approved an official response to that paper which was submitted to MAFF on 15 September 1988. The results of the current study effectively confirm the opinions expressed therein. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. A Study of fresh fish in the UK (BRS Consultancy)
The report gives summarised results of an investigation into the road distribution arrangements within the United Kingdom and includes computer simulations of different future options. An explanation of the operation of the main computer simulation (the ‘Pathfinder’) is given in the report. As a back-up to the report, a single copy of a complete printout of a single computer programme run has been supplied by the Consultants. It defines a national consumption and delivery requirement schedule for the whole of England and Wales, in a series of 10km squares. The grid pattern contains up to 66 squares in the N-S and up to 53 in E-W direction. The print out comprises several hundred pages of A3 size paper and it is impractical to produce copies with this report. A sample segment, with a short explanation, is provided as the final appendix of this report. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. An investigation into the possibilities for improvement in fishing industry facilities at Poole
Development of the area of sheltered moorings known as Fishermen’s Dock was proposed in 1982. Subsequently, Poole Harbour Commissioners questioned the ability of the local fishermen to service a loan which would be required to meet costs. Official statistics greatly under-estimate landings and landed value and this has been confirmed by an SFIA investigation. This study also suggests alternative improvement schemes and modifications to the ‘dock’ scheme. Conclusions are reached on the ability of the full time fishermen to pay for the necessary loan based on a sampling of boat’s earnings in a study of costings for the Fishermen’s Dock and some assumed costs for modified schemes. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Fleet Structures Model - Biological Feedback
The Fleet Structures Model* (FSM) is a predictive model under development by the Sea Fish Industry Authority. Its purpose is to simulate aspects of the structure and performance of the United Kingdom sea fishing fleet in order to make comparative assessments of fleet management policy scenarios. Because of the inherent complexity of the model it has been developed in separate sections. The first of these to reach completion as a stand-alone computer model is the Biological Feedback phase. This predicts the effects of catch levels on fish stocks, and the consequent effect on catch rates as stocks rise and fall. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. DISCARD STUDY ENGLISH NE COAST 1990/91
Discards of demersal fish are a major concern at the present time in the campaign to conserve fish stocks. Discards are those marine animals and fish which are brought aboard the vessel and then returned to the sea because they are unmarketable or below the legal minimum size. They do not include fish escaping through the meshes of the net during towing or those escaping whilst the net is alongside but still in the water. The discard rates in the past have been alleged to be high but the estimates have so far not been quantified in the English and Welsh fisheries. The Scottish Office (SOAFD) through the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen, have some data for Scottish vessels but the study described in this report makes the first real estimates for one important fishery – that of the North East Coast of England in ICES Area IVb. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Quality Audit of the Port of Brixham
This report presents the findings of a Quality Audit of the fishing port of Brixham that examined the quality of raw material supplies to the port, standards of physical infrastructure, operating practices and management controls. The quality of fish supplied to the market is generally vry good although improvements could be made with regard to gutting and temperature control by day boats. The port suffers from major problems of lack of space, poor road access and inadequate infrastructure, partly as a consequence of its physical geography. The design and layout of the market and associated facilities were found to pose serious problems of operational efficiency, quality control and food safety that are compounded by the lack of agreed standards, procedures and controls. -

MAFF Funded discard Study - Irish Sea Area VIIa
This report presents the results of studies of discard levels in Irish sea fisheries in area VIIa. The gears studied were otter trawls both Nephrops and demersal, pelagic trawls and Scottish seines. The species studied were cod, whiting, dover sole and plaice. The methodology was based upon that used by the discard team at the Marine laboratory, Aberdeen. Estimates of discarded fish were made on fishing voyages by Seafish staff who were briefed to avoid introducing changes to normal shipboard procedures. Samples of discarded fish were measured and a representative sub sample of the whole catch was also measured. Length/weight relationships and appropriate raising factors were used to calculate the weight and numbers of discarded and retained fish. The method used for sampling Nephrops is described; the results from those studies are reported elsewhere although no results are recorded in this report. Frozen at Sea Blue Whiting 'Surimi' Production Trials
Frozen at Sea Blue Whiting ‘Surimi’ Production Trials Tokyo – November 1978. Spring 1978 saw the successful production of Blue Whiting Surimi during the Stornoway processing trials conducted in conjunction with Nippon Suisan Kaisha of Japan (N.S.K.). The follow up marketing assessment by N.S.K., in Japan, proved blue whiting Surimi to be highly acceptable, with one major exception, which was product made from frozen at sea (FAS) material. This has since become a major problem in any future development, due to the Japanese company initially rejecting all product made from frozen raw material out of hand, even though sample results appeared to be adequate to meet their specifications. This report has been produced from a scanned original produced in December 1978 and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Mussels. Improving quality Through Improved Storage, Handling & Temperature Practices
Both cultivated and wild mussels are a live product and must be treated as such if they are to reach the market place in good, edible and safe condition. In other words they must satisfy and not put the customer at risk. If practices can be improved there is considerable potential for increasing the harvesting of mussels from UK waters such as The Wash. The likelihood of successful growth in the industry would be increased by guidelines or a quality code for the production of a quality product. The objective of this project is to enable recommendations for improved handling practices to be made to the industry by investigating the effects of different handling procedure such as dropping, purification, de-bearding, packing methods, storage times and temperatures, on mussel shell damage, storage life, and organoleptic quality. The poor handling practices to which mussels are subjected in the UK and the lack of appreciation of how spoilage takes place is preventing the UK of taking full advantage of this rich and relatively abundant resource. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Report for Anglo French Study on Noise Reduction Methods on European Fishing Vessels
This report contains representative examples of noise level surveys now carried out as a matter of course on vessels built under Sea Fish Industry Authority supervision. There are six surveys and all were carried out during the period November 1988 to March 1989. The vessels range from15.6m to 27.9m overall length and in power from 554 to 900 bhp. The data is presented factually and no conclusions are drawn at this stage. The data is to be compared with similar French vessels to develop an overall understanding of noise levels on modern diesel powered fishing vessels. The information set out in a format now adopted as a standard by Seafish. It is suggested that other organisations might wish to utilise the same format to allow of ready comparison between conditions on different vessels. Fish Supplies and Processing Capacity in the UK - Part II - The Processing Industry
This report is a companion document to Report 268 which is issued as Part I. Here the processing industry and its geographical location is analysed in relation to supplies including imports. The picture emerges that no one region of the UK is wholly self reliant in supplies and processing capacity. The concept of a resource centre is proposed. It concludes that Humberside is the dominant resource centre in the UK because of imports, overland supplies and processing capacity. This position is unlikely to change in the near future. The Fishing Industry of NE Scotland. An Analysis of Port Facilities, Fleets and Landings
Within the North East of Scotland between the Cromarty Firth and Stonehaven are situated the United Kingdom’s two top ports in terms of value of fish landed viz. Peterhead and Aberdeen, Fraserburgh challenges Grimsby, Newlyn and Lowestoft for third place. It is also the base for a large itinerant fleet of vessels fishing out of the ports in North West Scotland between Kinlochbervie and Mallaig; indeed the great majority of vessels fishing out of these ports are based on the Moray Firth between Lossimouth and Fraserburgh. Historically the area harboured a large number of herring drifters which until the 1950’s followed the herring shoals from Shetland to Great Yarmouth. Time Series for interpreting events in the sea
Time series are scientific measurements taken over sufficiently long periods of time. They permit the detection of rare of episodic events which would not have been apparent if collected over one year. The marine ecosystem gives good results from time series because there is a better coupling between signal and response than is normally found in land systems. -
Selectivity in Trawls Selection Devices aimed at the release of juvenile cod
Seafish have a continuing programme to improve selectivity in towed gear and considerable advances have been made in reducing discards of haddock and whiting from trawls through the use of square mesh panels inserted into the upper part of the extension. There has not so far been any similar reduction in cod discards. -

Technical Assessment of Multiple Bodied Trawl Development Project
The Highlands and Islands Enterprise Network approached the Sea Fish Industry Authority to provide a technical assessment for a grant application they had received. A small net manufacturer based in Thurso applied to develop a new type of multiple bodied trawl which was considered (theoretically) to be more efficient at catching certain species by increasing the total net area without the corresponding increase in resistance. They propose to design, construct and test a model in a flume tank before going on to construcing a full scale trawl for trails on a commercial vessel. The objectives of the assessment were to give an independent and impartial appraisal. -
Flume Tank Testing of 1:4 scale model trawl doors

The purpose is to establish a consistent method of predicting door performance in order that fishermen and others can be advised of the best size and design of door for a particular net. The performance of a single model trawl door is assessed by measuring the tensions and angles of the warp and bridle which retain the door in a fixed position in the tank. Two coefficients are derived : CL representing lift or spreading force and CD representing the drag force. CL/CD represents a measure of efficiency of the door. The Flume Tank equipment required to measure the necessary parameters is described along with the experimental procedures. Results are given for standard flat and vee doors over a range of angles of attack and heel. This data in the form of CLand CD is used as a base against which to compare the performance of other door types. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Comparative Sea Trials of plastic stack-next and stack only fish boxes
Although the wooden fish box is still commonly used in Scotland for handling fish both at sea and ashore there is a growing acceptance of an eventual change from wood to plastic boxes. Of the two types of plastic box available (stack-only and stick-nest) the stack-nest is considered a most suitable replacement and is already in use ashore but there have been reservations concerning it use at sea. From June to December of 1986, Seafish carried out a series of comparative trials on Scottish vessels to assess plastic boxes when used at sea. The boxes used were a new stack-nest design, produced to a Seafish specification as a replacement for the wooden box, and an existing plastic stack-only box of the same nominal capacity of 70 litres. The trials are described and discussed in this report This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Improved Utilisation of Fish Waste in the UK.
The fish industry developed around fishing ports when landings were plentiful and there was little concern about environmental impacts. Nowadays, natural resources and the environment are under threat and are becoming increasingly protected by law. Government policy now focuses on the protection of resources, promoting sustainable utilisation and reducing emissions to the environment. Fishing opportunities are reduced and waste generation is increasingly penalised. Concerns about farm animal diseases are resulting in the closure of some of the existing routes of waste utilisation and are adding further restrictions and costs to waste disposal. This has become a significant problem for many sectors of the fish industry and is unlikely to improve. It is essential that the fish industry minimises waste and maximises the value of all the material available to it. -
Mollusc Purification Plant - The Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company
The Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company wishes to install a small purification unit both to purify and hold native oysters for use in their seafood restaurant. They approached Seafish a year ago regarding tank design and approval procedure at the time when the Seafish vertical stack purification unit was under trial at Maldon, Essex. They considered this type of unit to be ideally suited for their application and decided to wait untilt rials were completed and the unit commercially available. -
Classification of Fish Species using High Resolution Sonar Techniques
This report describes the activities and results obtained from the research programme that was designed to investigate the feasibility of using high resolution sonar techniques for classifying fish species. Square Mesh Selector Panels as a Means of Improving Selectivity of Demersal Towed Fishing Gears
This report is a summary of all the work carried out so far by Seafish in collaboration with others and in particular with the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen. The trials were carried out on various types of commercial fishing vessel engaged in the North Sea and Irish Sea demersal fisheries. The details of each vessel are given in the report. The methodology adopted to make comparisons has varied. Selectivity data is best obtained by using a small mesh codend cover which measures the volume and species mix and size escaping from the main net. However, the essential purpose is to obtain comparative data on discard levels between a standard diamond mesh trawl and one which has been modified to give the undersized fish the maximum opportunity to escape. It is concluded that the use of a square mesh panel in the top of the extension will substantially reduce the level of discards of haddock and whiting and that such a step is worth taking now as a practical contribution to stock conservation. The Seafish recommendations are outlined in a Technical Information sheet appended to this report. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Discard and effort survey Channel ICES areas VIId, e, f and h 1997/8 and fisher self-sampling
The work reported completes the Seafish Channel Discard and Effort survey programme begun in 1995 (Course et al 1996). This survey is intended to obtain a description of the pattern of discarding in the UK towed gear metiers of the English Channel and to examine the feasibility of carrying out discard monitoring programmes on a sustained basis. Many of the commercial species caught by the Channel fleets are at or near full exploitation, meaning that the availability of the resource to those fleets is subject to quota allocations and recruitment variability. -
The Results of a Water and Effluent Study Carried Out at Shetland Catch Limited in August 1998

This report describes research investigating the transport and storage of the live whelk, Buccinum undatum. The project forms part of the West Ross Pesca Plan to investigate opportunities for diversifying fishing effort within the region. The plan has been implemented by the Highland Council who wish to reduce pressure on heavily exploited species. Whelks are not considered to be fully exploited and market demand is good. However, there is a requirement to improve handling and transport to ensure a quality product from a region with transportation difficulties. -
An assessment of optimum environmental criteria for the successful depuration of Ostrea edulis, Mercenaria mercenaria, Tapes decussatus, Tapes philippinarum, Cerastoderma edule, and Mytilus edulis, in the UK
The successful operation of a depuration system for bivalve molluscs requires them to be in good condition and their optimum physiological requirememnts to be maintained during the period they are immersed. These include mollusc density, seawater quality, salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen level. Seafish have over a period of several years investigated the depuration of both mussels M. edulis and oysters C. gigas and as a result introduced changes to the established design criteria for these species. -
The Development of a Series of Three Purification Tanks of Standard Design and their use with Artificial Seawater
In England and Wales plants used for the purification of bivalve molluscs must be licensed by the Department of Health following technical approval by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. This can only be given if such plants are constructed to meet generalised design criteria specified by MAFF and can be shown to cleanse molluscs to a satisfactory standard. -

Trials to Determine DAF Fish Effluent Treatment
As the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC) demands tighter control of the quality of effluent discharged into ~EU controlled waters, many coastal processors face dramatically increased effluent disposal charges. It is likely that most companies will use basic solids separation equipment to minimise effluent disposal costs, whilst larger companies may opt to use more sophisticated equipment to further treat the effluent themselves. Trials were carried out at three factories to determine the effectiveness of rotary wedge wire screening following by dissolved air flotation (DAF) for treating herring and white fish processing effluent. A range of chemical flocculants were tested to optimise DAF treatment. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. The integrated boxing of Nephrops - Comparative Trial
This trial arose due to concern about spoilage of typically handled Nephrops norvegicus (nephrops) catches. For the most common 1 day trip the practice is not to use ice and generally, at best, 2 day trip vessels top ice only to boxes in the hold. There has been a trend toward landing whole nephrops rather than tails an there is widespread belief that direct icing is harmful to whole nephrops. This comparative trial applied proper boxing principles, ie, weighing and correct icing, alongside usual stowage practice. Two successive trips were made on a representative vessel of each type ie, 1 day and 2 day trips from Mallaig. The fish quality results were obtained by following the trial catches through processing at D A Macrae Ltd., Sunderland. Apart from weighing and icing at sea the trial included observations of practice and temperature. The result indicate that for whole nephrops proper boxing and icing can reduce temperatures of the product to less than 2°C which gives considerable value advantage to 2 day trip catches on processing, and a discernible freshness improvement to 1 day trip catches. Icing did not have any apparent adverse effects. Weighing at sea was found to be operationally feasible with potentially suitable accuracy for commercial application. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Noise Reduction Methods on European Fishing Vessels
Much work is being done in Europe to study the sound levels and exposure times of fishermen whilst at sea carrying out their duties and this is a means of assessing the risk of hearing damage. A way of reducing risk is to limit and reduce noise in the spaces of fishing vessels to a safe level. Since many vessels have dangerous levels, practical onboard research into cost-effective noise reduction methods is being carried out. The main object of this report is to describe some work being carried out to reduce one particular problem, that of hydraulic noise. Electromagnetic Interference
It is probable that most people at one time or another will have experienced the effects of electromagnetic interference (EMI), in the form of interference patterns across the TV screen or crackle on radio broadcasts. On the fishing vessel, the scanning radio locking onto non-existent transmissions or the auto pilot suddenly going haywire, and many other unaccountable equipment malfunctions are all probably the result of EMI. The interference at the least is a minor annoyance or at the worst a serious disruption to the operation of navigation and radio communications, and consequently a danger to the security of the vessel and crew. The increased use of electronic and electrical equipment in fishing vessels, has substantially increased the likelihood of interference occurring. It is therefore essential that the fishing vessels of the future have electromagnetically compatible, electronic/electrical installations EMC. Propagation Interference may be propagated in two ways. a) RADIATED from the source to the affected equipment by non-metallic paths. b) CONDUCTED carried from the source to the affected equipment by metallic paths, including cables, vessel superstructure, hand rails, stays etc. Electromagnetic Interference on Fishing Vessels EMI - is defined as any electromagnetic disturbance which interrupts, obstructs, or otherwise degrades or limits the effective performance of electrical and electronic equipment. EMC - Electromagnetic Compatibility is defined as the condition in which systems work as intended, both within themselves and their environment. -

Power Measurement Trials on 'Golden West'
The Golden West is a stern trawler and was delivered to her owners in November 1988 from the yard of J N Miller and Sons at St Monans. The vessel is constructed of steel and has a Cummins KTA19-M propulsion engine rated at 500hp at 1800 revs/min which drives a four bladed fixed pitch propeller through a reverse reduction gear box with a 5.335 to 1 ratio. It has become apparent that the engine cannot operate within the manufacturer's stated Exhause Gas Temperature limited during fishing operations. -
Business Plan for the Wash Fisheries
The Wash has an opportunity to increase its market share of shellfish supply. The best opportunities lie with mussels where there are prospects of increasing the landings and improving quality by relaying. There is a growing market for mussels and for a selected quality pre-packed product prices of up to 50p/kg are now possible. This compares to the 9 or 10p/kg paid for Wash mussels at present. The Business Plan outlined in this report describes how this situation might be taken advantage of by the Wash Fishery as a whole. It suggests an integrated production and marketing company. The Business Plan has been prepared by Seafish and Hodgson Impey, Chartered Accountants. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Norfish: Norway - Prospects for the 1990s
In 1990 Seafish commissioned a study of Nordic fish supplies to the UK markets. The initial reports (Nos. 397,398) were based mainly on an analysis of the available statistical data, but in October 1991 Seafish led a delegation from the UK industry to Iceland which provided an opportunity for an in depth examination of the present and future ideas of Icelandic fish supplies (Report No. 399). That still left an important gap in the information, however, and the chance to fill it came with a second, smaller mission – though with a much more detailed itinerary – to Norway in November 1992, led by Alan Hopper, then Technical Director of Seafish. The present report is largely the outcome of that seven day visit which afforded a remarkable cross section of the Norwegian fishing industry. The length of this report, and the comprehensive picture that it is able to present, is a testimony to the wealth of opinion and information that was provided by individuals and organisations contacted during the visit. The report makes considerable use of those enriching experiences and of some of the abundant literature on Norway’s fishing industry. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Estuary Profile Burry Inlet S. Wales
This is one of a series of reports on the estuarine shellfish areas of the UK. The Burry Inlet has an important commercial fishery for cockles with landings of 4-5000 tonnes per year. The fishery is facing a Closing Order restricting landings unless they are purified or processed in a prescribed manner. The report describes the portential for the fishery especially in mussels, but points out certain difficulties which have to be resolved. -
Channel Spider Crab Fishery (Maia squinado)
In 1994 a party from Seafish and fishermen visited St. Malo in France to investigate a trap fishery for cuttlefish. The aim was to investigate methods of exploiting cuttlefish other than by their traditional method of gill and/or trammel nets. The use of static nets to target cuttlefish from SE channel ports had been severely hampered by the presence of large quantities of spider crabs on the traditional netting grounds. -

Water Usage and Effluent Production in Whitefish Processing - A Summary of Seven Water and Effluent Audits
From 2001 The Urban Water Treatment Directive will add greatly to the cost and difficulty of disposing of waste water. This will present a significant problem to the fish industry in the future, coastal businesses will be charged on the strength and volume of their effluent. The stronger the effluent and the greater the quantity, the higher the treatment costs. As a result, many fish processors will face dramatically increased charges from the water companies for the production, treatment and disposal of effluent. To determine possible future costs and identify ways of reducing these costs, detailed water and effluent audits were carried out in seven representative whitefish processing companies. This report summarises the findings of the seven audits and highlights the costs and common problems found with water usage and effluent production. Simple solutions to these problems are also outlined. -

Seafish briefing - Organisations addressing labour issues in the fishing and aquaculture sector. April 2016.
Since approximately 2006, various concerns regarding abuses of workers engaged in the seafood industry have steadily attracted more attention, from the media and civil society advocacy groups. The main concern has been reports of coercive treatment of certain categories of both sea and land-based workers, through abusive labour and recruitment practices variously referred to as slavery or slavery-like practices, forced and bonded labour, human trafficking, as well as serious forms of child labour. This has led to more monitoring, and a wide range of governmental, inter-governmental and NGO initiatives to address the concerns. There have been a number of studies into the scale of the issue but further study is required in order to determine the international scale of human rights and labour abuses in the seafood industry. This briefing note: details some of the key reviews that have looked at the scale of labour issues in the fishing and seafood sectors; and lists the organisations addressing labour rights in the fishing sector. This document was originally produced in March 2015 and was updated in April 2016. -
